Algebra 2/Trigonometry Course Description 2014-2015 Textbook: Algebra 2 By Prentice Hall ISBN-13: 978-0-13-369705-6 Cost: $120 Instructor: Mr. Johnson E-mail: bjohnson@nsd.org Phone: (425) 408-7483 Office: WHS Room 330 Algebra 2/Trigonometry Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 1 and Geometry (A or B) Equipment: Students will need a Texas Instrument TI-83 or TI-84 family of graphing calculators. Additional materials are listed below. Course Overview: Algebra 2/Trig is a rigorous program that demands discipline, motivation, and dedication from its students. Students will continue to build and expand upon the study of functions presented in Algebra. Students will study linear, polynomial, absolute value, radical, rational, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Students will also study sequences, series, probability, and stats sections. Students will work independently and with others. Materials Needed: To be successful in this class, each student will need a spiral bound notebook preferably of graph paper, or looseleaf paper in a three ring binder, pencils, pen, and a graphing calculator. These items along with the textbook are to be brought to class daily. Grading: Assessments(Tests/quizzes): 65% Class/homework, presentations: 25% Semester Final Exam: 10% We will follow the grade scale listed in the student handbook. Grades will be rounded to the nearest whole number. Assessments (Tests/Quizzes): 65% To be fair to all students, all Assessments will be timed. You will not be allowed extra time (unless you have an IEP/504). For calculator-based assessments, students must be prepared with a working graphing calculator. (Bring extra batteries). I do not have calculators for students to borrow for assessments. Sharing calculators on assessments is a form of cheating and will not allowed. The WHS math department does have graphing calculators for students to loan. See me for the forms. Note: this is a two-day process requiring parent approval and signature. It cannot be done the day of an assessment. Tests will be given at the end of each unit, covering all of the concepts in the unit along with some information from previous units. They will be announced in advance and no retakes will be allowed since it is assumed that students will be prepared in advance. Quizzes will be given throughout the unit. They will be online and/or in class and will cover a smaller quantity of information from the unit. There will be no retakes on quizzes. Also there are no test/quiz corrections for extra points. However, you may (and are encouraged to) come in during non-class time to re-do missed questions for future knowledge. Class/homework, presentations: 25% 5%- Classwork – Students will complete a lot of work in-class daily. This will also include warm-ups and notes. Classwork will be graded/checked daily. 15%- Homework – Homework(s) will be assigned almost daily. They are due the next class period. They will be graded at the beginning of each class period and will be worth up to 4 points and recorded on the student’s homework log. They will be primarily assessed for completion and work shown. Students will receive partial to no credit if work is not shown. Late homework will be worth at most half credit. If late due to excused absence, you will get 1 day per day absent to turn in the work. Homework logs are collected at the end of the 10 assignments (approx. every two weeks) for up to 40 points. Homework logs that are unexcused late will receive half credit. 5%- Presentations – Students are required to present 2 problems to the class during the semester. These are informal explanations of how to solve a problem to the class. Final Exam – 10% There will be a cumulative final exam at the end of each semester. Extra Credit– This course only allows extra credit for additional presentations beyond the required two. There is no other extra credit. Absences: If you have an excused absence, you will be given credit for any missed work that is made up within the same amount of time that you were absent. You are responsible for getting the work you missed, including class work, homework, and warm-ups. If you have an excused absence on the day of a test, quiz, or homework quiz, then you should be prepared to make it up the day you return to school. If you are absent the day before a test, you will be expected to take the test on the assigned day since all tests will be announced well ahead of test day. If you have an unexcused absence, you will not receive credit for any missed work. Students are expected to take a make up assessment during class or after school. If the student chooses to make up the assessment during class, then he/she is expected to have class/home work assignments completed for the next day. Refer to the Homework Log. Tardies: The expectation is that students come to class on time. Students will need to sign in when they are tardy to class. Excessive tardiness ( >3) will result in after school detention(s). Classroom Expectations: All food (including gum) and drinks will NOT be allowed in class. Except for bottled water. You will be asked to remove all “hoodies” and headphones in class. There are no breaks once a test or quiz has started! Any cell phones/media devices seen or heard in class during instructional/learning time will be taken away and a discipline review will be sent to your administrator. You may not use a cell phone as a calculator. Absolutely NO Cheating! Any form of cheating will be referred to the admin for disciplinary action. You are here to learn! Any behavior that distracts, disrupts others from learning will not be tolerated. Be ready to work when the bell rings and continue the learning process until the bell ends the period. Do not pack up early or stand by the door for the bell to ring. Sign out if you must leave the classroom. You will be allowed one bathroom use per week unless you have a parent or doctors note excusing your condition. Extra Help: It is imperative that you seek help immediately as needed. Extra help is available during options time and selected after school days during the week.
