The USA 1919-41
Key Question 1: How far did the US
economy boom in the 1920s?
Focus Point: On what was the economic boom based?
Task: Write an obituary for Henry Ford.
Date set:
Date Due:
An obituary is a piece of writing that appears in newspapers
following the death of someone famous or significant.
Begin by conducting some independent research into Henry Ford
and the automobile industry in the 1920s. You must use your
knowledge and classwork to write an obituary of his life (he died in
1947). This should include:
• A brief introduction stating who he was and what he was known
for.
• An explanation of the reasons for his success (e.g. assembly
line).
• Evidence of his success – statistics, facts, figures.
• An explanation of his impact on the economic boom in America –
what other industries were affected? how did the car change
people’s lives and lead to prosperity?
DO NOT copy and paste anything
DO NOT spend pages describing his early life e.g. where he went
to school, what his favourite food was and what his flatmate’s pet
hamster was called. It’s irrelevant and boring.
Key Topic 1: The US Economy
1919-1929
Focus Point: Problems in agriculture
Task: Taking the role of a wheat farmer in the 1920s, write a
letter to your congressman (like an MP) explaining the problems
you are currently facing.
Farmers were not sharing in the prosperity of the 1920s for a
number of reasons. You need to be able to identify and explain
these reasons.
Your aim/purpose is to try and convince the congressman to do
something to relieve the problems you are facing. Your letter
should include the following keywords/concepts:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Overproduction
Competition (Canada)
Combine Harvester
Loans
Demand (following WW1)
Exports
Tarriffs
Boll Weevil
DO NOT simply describe the above words. Try to explain why
they are causing farmers misery in the 1920s.
DO NOT write more than 300 words.

Key Topic 1: The US Economy
1919-1929
Focus Point: Causes and consequences of the economic boom?
Task: Use the museum PowerPoint template to create a virtual
exhibition entitled “The 1920s – winners and losers”. Your aim is
to show an understanding that not all social and industrial groups
shared in the economic prosperity of the 1920s.
Your museum PowerPoint should consist of 2 main rooms –
WINNERS and LOSERS.
In each room there should be 3 main artefacts (pictures) which
help to tell the story of who did, and did not benefit from the
prosperity of the 1920s. E.g. in your LOSERS room you may
choose to have a picture of 1920s miners as the coal industry was
in decline at this time.
Each artefact then need to link to a page where you use your
contextual knowledge to explain your artefact and what it tells
historians about the WINNERS and LOSERS of the boom.
DO NOT copy and paste anything
DO NOT just put in the pictures, there must be explanation of
the artefact

Explanation page that
links to the artefacts
Key Topic 2: US Society 19191929
Focus Point: The Roaring 20s
Task: The ‘Drawing Twenties’
Date set:
Date Due:
These drawings are by Thomas Hart Benton, and they show his
interpretations of the changes to American society in the 1920s.
Your task is to use your knowledge of Key Question 2 to create a
collage that is your own interpretation of the Roaring Twenties.
You should look to include images/scenes involving:
• Entertainment – cinema, radio, sport, jazz, dancing
• Changes in the lives of women – flappers
• The ‘Red Scare’ and fear of immigrants
• Intolerance and prejudice towards black Americans
• Prohibition
Each relevant image needs to be numbered, and then on a separate
piece of paper (or on the back), you need to label the images and
write a short summary of this aspect of society in America in the
1920s.
This task can be done by hand or using a computer/iPad
Key Topic 2: US Society 19191929
Focus Point: Prohibition and gangsterism
TASK: Design your own
temperance movement
poster/cartoon
Date set:
Date Due:
Here you can see examples of posters and cartoons released by
the ‘dry’ campaign to convince people to support prohibition. Use
the arguments of the ASL and WCTU to create your own
persuasive anti-liquor poster or cartoon.
Key Topic 2: US Society 19191929
Focus Point: Racism and intolerance
TASK: Write a feature article about the conviction and execution
of Sacco and Vanzetti.
This case made news around the world as many people saw it as a
huge injustice. For some it was a sign that America was an
intolerant country and not the ‘melting pot’ that it had been 50
years before.
From the point of view of a British journalist, write an article
about this event. Make sure to include:
• A thoughtful headline
• Relevant pictures with captions
• An explanation of the Red Scare – what is it? why has it come
about? who is affected?
• A description of how the American government has responded
to increased immigration in the 1920s e.g. laws, quotas, policies
• An interview with Judge Thayer
DO some of your own research
DO the activity by hand or computer
DO use the template/outline if you want to
DO NOT write lots of paragraphs describing the facts of the
case (evidence, suspects, witnesses)
DO NOT copy and paste anything from the internet.

Key Topic 3: The USA in the
depression 1929-1933
Focus Point: What were the consequences of the Crash?
TASK: Create a song/movie/animation that highlights the social
consequences of the economic crash and people’s reaction to
President Hoover.
This task is focused on the SOCIAL consequences – how it
affected people. You should consider using the following
keywords/ideas:
Depression; unemployment; falling demand; standing in line;
tramping the streets; eviction; homelessness; destitute;
deliberate arrest; prosperity is just around the corner; no social
security; farmers; public relief programmes; Hoovervilles; soup
kitchens; undernourishment; rugged individualism; Herbert
Hoover; breadline; Hoover blanket; Dust Bowl; suicide; starvation;
Franklin Roosevelt
Your work needs to consider the following:
• the emotions people would have felt after losing everything
• the spread of the Depression, geographically and socially
• the role of the government and what people thought of it –
particularly the President’s role
• the impact on the American Dream
• the possibility of recovery – research Roosevelt
You can perform it, upload it to YouTube or bring it in on a
memory stick. High quality editing and creativity is encouraged.

Key Topic 4: Roosevelt and the
New Deal
Focus Point: The nature of the New Deal
TASK: Using the template provided, design a top trump card for a
New Deal act/measure.
In case you don’t know, Top Trumps is a card game played by
young people all over the world. The cards will be based on a
theme e.g. cars, aircraft, superheroes, footballers etc.
Take the example of superheroes. Each card will be based on a
different superhero. It will have a list of attributes for that
hero - for example, STRENGTH; SPEED; WEAPONS; SIZE. The
hero will be given a rating out of 10 or 100 for each of these
attributes. Therefore, Superman might get a rating of 9 for
strength, but only 2 for weapons.
The cards can then be played against
each other. If you defeat your
opponent’s card, then you get to keep
it.
Your task is to create a Top Trump
card for a New Deal act/measure, for
example, the CCC or the NIRA.
Look at the next page for further
guidance and use the blank template to
structure your card.

Key Topic 4: Roosevelt and the
New Deal
Focus Point: Opposition to the New Deal
TASK: Compare two cartoons about the New Deal
B
Key Question 4: How successful
was the New Deal?
Focus Point: Why did the New Deal encounter opposition?
TASK: Compare two cartoons about the New Deal
Look at the two cartoon. They each make a comment about
Roosevelt and the New Deal.
On a piece of lined paper, complete the following tasks:
1. Highlight/circle and then label the parts of the cartoon which
will help you to interpret the cartoonist’s message.
2. Are the cartoons FOR or AGAINST the New Deal?
3. What is the message of each cartoon?
4. Explain how you came to this conclusion – using details from the
cartoon and your own knowledge.
5. Which cartoon is better at getting its message across to its
audience? Which cartoon is more effective? Explain why.
EXTENSION: Design your own cartoon commenting on the New
Deal.
This could be from the point of view of a supporter of Roosevelt
(“The New Deal is changing American society, making it fairer for
workers and helping those most vulnerable in society”).
OR
It could be from the point of view of a Republican/Businessman or
other critic of Roosevelt (“The New Deal is wasting taxpayer’s
money, it is not going far enough to help some groups in society,
America was built on rugged individualism so the New Deal makes
people lazy, Roosevelt is becoming like a dictator”)

TASK: Prepare for a hot air
balloon debate entitled Who
benefitted the most from the
New Deal.
A hot air balloon is travelling across the Atlantic Ocean. It is
carrying the achievements of the New Deal. These are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
The creation of a new type of society in America
It’s impact on industrial workers
It’s impact on unemployment and the economy
It’s impact on African Americans
It’s impact on women
It’ impact on Native Americans.
Unfortunately, it has a rip and is slowly going down. Only one of the
achievements can stay in the basket, therefore it needs to be the
most important/significant one.
Using Walsh (pg 382-383 – e-Learning) and the internet you will need
to investigate and make notes on these different achievement. How
much impact did they have? Were some achievements more far
reaching than others? You should find evidence to support your
conclusion. E.g. The New Deal was successful for African Americans
as 200,000 benefitted from the CCC.
Key Topic 4: Roosevelt and the
New Deal
Focus Point: The extent of the recovery
TASK: Prepare for a hot air
balloon debate entitled Who
benefitted the most from the
New Deal.
Once you have researched these New Deal achievements you will need
to write a 30 second/75 word speech for one explaining why it is the
most important and why it should be kept in the hot air balloon (even
if you don’t think it is). Try to make it persuasive, passionate and full
of evidence to support your claim.
In the debate in class you will be split in to groups. Each group will
argue on behalf of one of these New Deal achievements. You won’t
know which New Deal achievement you will be arguing for until you get
to the lesson. You will be able to use your 30 second speeches in the
lesson.
We will then evaluate the strongest argument, and also the strongest
group – even if their New Deal achievement is not the most far
reaching.
