Job Description: San Diego Miramar College
Instructional Assistant Program
Instructional Assistants (IAs) will work both inside and outside the classroom under the direction and
supervision of a faculty member for one semester. This position will support Basic Skills English/ESOL
students and provide IAs with classroom experience to complement their graduate curriculum/training
program/own experience, and strengthen their preparation to teach Basic Skills in the future. IAs will 1)
Increase student success at the basic skills level, 2) Support faculty in basic skills instruction, and 3) Assist
faculty in preparing students to be successful college students/achieve their educational goals.
Training and Experience:
IA’s will have training or experience from either (1) Enrollment in/completion of a graduate/training
program focusing on TESOL, English, or the Teaching of Reading/Writing or (2) Instructional experience
related to ESOL/English composition.
Role of an Instructional Assistant:
Under the direction of an instructor, IAs may:
Assist students with concepts, principles, and terminologies from ESL or Basic Writing/Reading
courses; Assist students with related assignments.
Tutor students individually or in small groups, reinforcing or following up on instructor directions.
Limited materials preparation for instructor or student use.
Provide limited academic instruction to students.
Assist in preparing, administering, and assessing student work.
Provide relevant information to instructors regarding student progress.
More Specific Information:
In Spring 2013, you work with one professor. You would assist this one professor in one class.
You will work a minimum of eight hours and a maximum of twelve hours/week.
You will attend every class meeting. So, if the class met T/TH from 11:00 to 12:30, you would be
responsible for going to class EVERY Tues AND Thurs from 11:00 to 12:30. Depending on the
number of units, classes meet 3 or 6 hours/week (normally 3 hours/week). Yes, some of our
classes are at night.
You are responsible for participating throughout the semester, from week one to week sixteen.
Other hours will be fulfilled via holding office hours, tutoring one or more students, helping with
assessment, creating materials, meeting with the professor, providing workshops, etc.
This job is $9.50/hour
