Name: __________________________ Subject: Biomedical Research Teacher Name: Sullivan Date: ___________________ Cell Organelles Introduction: This webquest is modified from Anthony Petrole, Patricia McGee and Deborah Claxton. Based on the work of Bernie Dodge. A recent supervirus has swept the nation and is threatening our human existence. The president has been made aware of this possible catastrophe and issued an executive order to help combat this unprecedented situation. You will be working as a research investigator for the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to understand the virus, how it works and how to possibly stop its spread. What is known: The virus targets specific organelles and causes them to malfunction/shut down. You must focus on the following questions to solve this problem: 1. What organelles are being targeted? 2. What evidence do you have for your conclusion? 3. Based on the case studies provided, is it possible that more than one organelle is impacted? If so, what are they? Task: You will analyze case studies that have been compiled by doctors at local hospitals. Your mission is: * identify which organelles are impacted * explain your rationale for your decision * investigate if any one organelle is more important that the other organelles. Before a vaccine can be developed, we must know which organelles are impacted. Process: You are the researcher. Your job is to 1. compile facts that indicates what organelle(s) is being affected by the virus. 2. develop a presentation to be give before other researchers explaining your idea. 3. Before reading the case studies, visit the websites listed in "Resources" to review information on organelles. 4. Review the case files below. The case files are located on my webpage under Biomedical Research: Daily Dose. By doing this activity you will gain an understanding of the organelles and their functions. The scoring rubric is linked on my web page with the case studies. Conclusion: The following information should be included in your presentation: 1. your name 2. title of assignment 3. your findings: specifically what organelles were being targeted, the rationale behind your decisions, what ruled out other organelles 4. alternative resources not listed on this quest page
