Pennsylvania
William Penn was given the
colony by King Charles of England,
he wrote Pennsylvania’s first
constitution.
William Penn belonged to a
Protestant group of dissenters
called the Society of Friends, or
Quakers.
Penn believed that the land
belonged to the Native Americans
and that settlers should pay for it.
William Penn saw the colony as a
“holy experiment”, a chance to
put Quaker ideals of toleration
and equality into practice. He
designed the city of Philadelphia,
calling it “the city of brotherly
love”
1701 The Charter of Liberties,
granted the colonists the right to
elect representatives to the
legislative assembly.
