However, this summer I joined a larger Human Resources team at Colgate-Palmolive. International Italian American Society One of my main projects was to travel to Maine for a month and create training curriculums for sales and marketing teams. I researched training courses, contacted and networked with other Colgate-Palmolive employees and trainers across the country. I conducted a needs assessment for each team, and created a 24-month training curriculum. In total, I developed 32 unique training paths customized to develop competency needs desired by each team member. It was an opportunity filled with amazing learning experiences. The company trusted me to deliver results and it feels amazing that I produced something that will make a real difference in the organization. As I began my internship, I hoped to find a mentor because I believe it is important to have someone you can trust by your side when you are in a new professional environment. Mentoring is heavily encouraged at Colgate-Palmolive and my supervisor became mine. He has been a tremendous influence throughout my internship, providing feedback on my performance and advice on developing my HR skills. At Colgate-Palmolive there are also endless networking opportunities. During my first few weeks, my supervisor made sure that I had contact with other professionals in the HR department. Also, as I worked on my project I met other professionals within the sales, marketing, and finance divisions. Colgate-Palmolive has an open door policy and people are more than happy to help interns in any way they can. In the end we are all on one team striving for the company’s success and I think everyone understands this. It’s the reason that connecting with others throughout this massive organization has become second nature. Zeta Psi My advice to Marist students would be to always remain focused but always have some fun. Complete at least one internship before you reach your senior year. Internships are amazing because they give you an inside look at what you will encounter after graduation. The experience you gain is something that textbooks and professors cannot teach you. It is critical to become active in the “real world” while preparing to become a young professional and it will absolutely pay off! I would have done anything for even a small chance to be a part of the process that produces huge, multi-million dollar games. Ubisoft in Montreal, Canada, was the ideal choice for me because they are a forerunner in the games industry and one of the world’s largest publishing companies, producing games such as Rayman and Assassins Creed, and using amazing computer technology. As a Network Programmer Intern, I was part of an online programming team for an as yet unannounced AAA video game. The team was responsible for online functionality of the game in development. I designed and implemented tools that will assist the team in maintaining operations when the game launches, along with features in the game itself. I used C++ and C# programming languages, and assisted in planning future game features. My supervisor had several years of experience at Ubisoft. He worked on more than six games, including Far Cry 3 and the movie-to-game adaptation of James Cameron’s Avatar. He mentored me throughout the internship. His supervisor and the rest of the online team also showed me the ropes. Everyone was extremely friendly and easy to relate to. The network potential has been amazing. Ubisoft Montreal employs more than 2,000 employees and there are about 30 other offices around the world who often share projects. The employees are people from many countries around the world. It was a fascinating experience to meet so many people of different origins. That, coupled with the fact that “everyone knows everyone” in this industry, I believe I have only scratched the surface of this internship’s networking potential. I would absolutely take a job at Ubisoft if offered one. This has been my dream for a very long time and the internship has far exceeded my expectations. It is a fantastic workplace with lots of exciting opportunities and potential. Even though it would mean working outside of the U.S. for a while, I would accept an offer almost immediately. My advice to Marist students about internships? Expand your horizons and dare to try new things. Be sure to keep your LinkedIn and Web portfolios up to date because this is extremely important when you are seeking opportunities. That’s how Ubisoft found me; I didn’t even apply. Luck plays a part in your success, but you can definitely improve your luck by making sure you are visible online. Considering my major and minor and after working in college and public television studios for several years, I was anxious to intern in a professional studio. Working with WGGB, popularly referred to as ABC40, as a News and Production intern, I was able to be a part of the news team working with anchors, reporters, and the production crew. The position allowed a great amount of freedom in terms of tasks and responsibilities. I was able work in the studio during filming, assist on shoots in the field, and help edit and manage stories in the newsroom before filming. My supervisor was the managing editor and is a veteran in the news production field. He is also the anchor for the 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00 o’clock evening programs. In addition to my supervisor, I was able to network with a variety of professionals in different stages of their careers. Particularly, it was incredible to talk about breaking into the TV industry with recent college graduates hired by ABC40. Internships are not easy to come by in a competitive field like TV production. I started in January and applied for more than 20 summer internships. It seemed like a never-ending process, but I finally got the offer in April. My advice is to put yourself out there, and take it as an opportunity to show the world how qualified, dedicated, and hardworking you are. Check out big name companies, non-profits, and local affiliates, because you never know where that opportunity is waiting. If you can, do more than one internship. I have had three other internships at GIG Marketing, LiveHotSpot NYC, and the Adirondack Theatre Festival. Each experience is helping me narrow down my prospective career path as I learn where my real strengths lie. The way I found this opportunity is…well, let me start over again. This opportunity actually found me. A while ago I received a LinkedIn message from a Dolce & Gabbana recruiter. He had heard about me from a woman I met at my very first internship with Perry Ellis (your connections are everything in fashion and many other industries, so treat them with great care). Since my personal niche is luxury and Dolce & Gabbana is an Italian luxury industry fashion house, I made sure I reconnected with the recruiter when I returned from studying abroad in Paris. It was a great feeling to land the position as a Buyer Intern. Since buying incorporates all other departments, there is a lot of interaction among them. My primary activities were to run the daily sales when I was in the office. I also ran a weekly season versus season recap report that showed how sales and stock units were performing. From time to time I would allocate stock from store to store based on requests from sales associates and customers. This is all done by analysis of numbers (sell-thru and true stock). I created buy books for the fall/winter season and updated shipping reports per store. I also attended store meetings and walk-throughs, which are excellent opportunities to gain more knowledge of the sales team, products in the store and set-ups done by the visual team. My supervisors were outstanding, always thoroughly explaining the tasks that needed to be done. Taking notes has been the best way for me to keep on top of things without having to rely on my supervisors. Whenever I approached a new task I knew I could function independently without bothering anyone by relying on my notes. Networking is extremely important whether you are looking for an internship or that first full-time job after graduation. Networking can get your resume passed on to people who can give you a great learning opportunity, like mine. My advice for Marist students who want to intern is, always take the initiative, always act professionally (dress the part as well), and always take notes! However, this summer I was lucky enough to be hired as an Audit Intern at KPMG, a prestigious firm that offers excellent experience in the accounting field. When the internship began, I went to Orlando, Florida, to participate in a training program with 1,400 other KPMG interns. The summer was off to a great start. Auditing is client based work and I was assigned to three different clients. My main tasks were to analyze financial statements, check mathematical accuracy, tick and tie work papers, roll data forward from the prior year, and check internal controls by applying procedures such as substantive testing and the test of details. I also accompanied my supervisors on walk-throughs to gain an understanding of the procedures each client used to issue their financial statements. A very important opportunity I had was to work with a client with a past issue of fraud. U.S. businesses must abide by numerous laws and regulations and auditors have specific responsibilities when auditing those with a fraud history. The work is more intensive; extra attention is given to performing the test of control, and a larger number of samples are required to verify financial statements. Since I worked with three clients, I had three different supervisors, all of whom are highly skilled, experienced employees at KPMG. Auditing is based on teamwork and my supervisors stressed the interdependence and communication skills needed to succeed in a team environment. They always assigned me challenging tasks and were there to support me as I worked them through. I would definitely accept a full-time position, if offered one, because I enjoy the work, the environment and most of all, the people who work at KPMG. The Circle It has been said that an opportunity will not come to you, but that you must knock on the door of opportunity. My suggestion for Marist students is that they build and expand their networks, including current Marist interns and alumni, because you never know which door will lead you to where you want to be. SENIOR Major: Biomedical Sciences Internships: Family Vision Center / Highland Optometry I always knew I wanted to have a career in the medical field, so after doing some research I decided to begin by taking a look into the field of Optometry. My first internship was with Dr. Bywater at Highland Optometry in Highland, NY. I fell in love with the field as I observed everything from general eye exams and contact lens fittings to eye injuries and vision correction surgery consultations. Dr. Bywater loved to answer my questions and taught me so many things about instrument usage and eye anatomy. I conducted a research study for him by comparing two eye pressure instruments for their accuracy and reliability. For the past two semesters I have furthered my internship experience with Dr. Genshaft at Family Vision Center in Hyde Park, NY. In addition to telling some pretty great jokes, he has taught me how to use nearly all the equipment in the examination rooms. In addition, his patients kindly allowed me to look at their eyes with the scopes. I have become more comfortable with patient interaction by watching him. He even took a few hours out of his busy day to do a mock exam with me where I played the doctor! An internship is so much more than just earning more college credits or having something great to put on your resume. My internships not only amplified my eagerness for the field but also gave me connections and a strong foundation to further my education. You can never really be sure if you’re right for a profession until you dive into it and an internship provides the perfect swimming pool! Both of my internships were such positive experiences that I can’t wait to have interns myself when I have my own practice! My advice to Marist students is that internships are essential to build connections and gain knowledge while you are in college. The people with whom you will intern are the ones you are aspiring to become, so why not learn everything you can from them now? INTRAMURALS • club sports • RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS Marist College is very proud of its extracurricular activities, which range from club sports to intramural and recreational activities. Club sports are seasonal and compete against other regional college programs. Intramurals offer any student, whether expert or novice, the chance to play on a team without the time demands of a club sport. Intramurals are designed to be co-ed, female, and/or male teams, and can change yearly depending on student interest. Recreational activities offer non-competitive programs ranging from golf and pilates, to roller skating and indoor rock climbing. Students interested in participating in either club sports, intramurals, or recreational programs should contact Intramural Office, x2482, for information on how to get involved.
