Equation Writing Take Home Unit
Directions: The following assignment is worth 30 points. It is exactly like a HW set, only it is mandatory that everyone do it.
It is due ___________________. I will walk around on the day it is due and check to see that all of the problems have been
attempted. If they have been, you will receive 30 points. If they have not, you will receive an arbitrary score deemed fair by me, Mr.
Davis.

Below are equations that should be written net ionically and balanced. After the equation is balanced,
answer the follow-up question.
a. Solid lithium hydride is placed in water. How does the oxidation number of the hydrogen atom
differ in hydrides versus most other hydrogen containing compounds?
b. An excess of ammonia gas is added to a solution of zinc(II) sulfate. What is the hybridization of
the nitrogen atom in ammonia?
c. Solid sodium acetate is added to hydrochloric acid. Which would show a greater lattice energy,
HCl or HBr? Explain.
d. Solid barium carbonate is reacted with nitric acid. Another carbonate, sodium hydrogen
carbonate, is better known as what?
e. Solid aluminum sulfide is added to water. Describe the value of the bond angle present between
the H-O-H in water.
f. Silver metal is dropped in dilute (6M) nitric acid. Why will nitric acid only ever act as an
oxidizing agent (in other words, why will the nitrogen in nitric acid only ever reduce?).
g. Zinc metal is treated with tin(II) nitrate. Does zinc metal show any type of magnetism
(ferromagnetism, diamagnestism, or paramagnetism)? Explain.
h. Solid ammonium chloride is added to a solution of sodium hydroxide. What is the molecular
shape of the ammonium ion?
i.
Calcium sulfite is added to hydrochloric acid. What is the name of the acid that contains the
sulfite ion?
j.
Propyne is burned in the presence of excess oxygen gas. What is the general relationship
(formula) that exists between the carbon and hydrogen atoms for alkynes?
