ROBBERY PROCEDURE
If alarm is set off by accident

Advise a supervisor immediately if you know you have set off an alarm.

Authorized personal will contact Alarm Company.

When police call, turn the call over to a supervisor.
Hold up in process

Stay calm.

Carry out the robber’s instructions without argument.

When asked for cash tell robber you are reaching into your drawer for the cash.

Tell robber if another employee will be entering the area, don’t do anything to frighten or annoy the
robber.

Don’t stare at the robber or start writing, but be observant, notice details of speech, mannerisms,
appearance and firearms.

When the robber leaves, note method and direction of escape, also try to get the make of car and
license.

Alert management to notify police, under no circumstances should you touch, move or disturb
anything on the premises until the police arrive with the following exceptions.
o
Secure money to minimize loss
o
Employees, individually, fill out robber identification form
o
Have any witnesses write down an independent description of everything observed
If taken hostage

Faint, get sick or fake a heart attack, if possible, outside of the building or if placed in car – seat belt
yourself in and get as low as possible in vehicle.

Steps to follow immediately after a robbery
1.
Distribute Robbery Assignment Cards #2 through #6 to available personnel.
2. Meet victim teller or employee at door or window.
• If robber is still in view, hold your position to observe direction of escape and description.
• Relay this information to assistant calling police.
3. Lock all doors.
• Place Office Temporarily Closed Signs in clear view.
4. Wait at the door for police to arrive and to control access to building.
5. When certain the robber has left the area -- or when instructed to do so by the police dispatcher -direct an employee to exit the building carrying the All-Clear Placard aloft and wait for the police.
• Follow any other procedures previously established by local law enforcement.
6. Coordinate the investigation with law enforcement, employees and members.
7. If requested, provide law enforcement with copies of the Record of Bait Money Form for the
currency stolen.
8. Discuss the robbery only with designated law enforcement and bank officials.
9.
Fill out an Ident-A-Card description of the robber.

Steps to follow immediately after a robbery.
1. Announce to everyone that there has been a robbery.
2. Ask everyone to stay in the building until law enforcement arrives.
• If a member insists on leaving, ask for two pieces of identification and list the member's name, address and
telephone number on the back of this card.
3 Obtain the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all who remain in the building.
• List them on the Robbery Witness Record.
4. Discuss the robbery only with designated law enforcement and bank officials.
5.

Steps to follow immediately after a robbery.
1. Calm victims and witnesses.
• Gather witnesses together in an area away from where the robber might have been.
2. Isolate any victim displaying an emotional reaction to the robbery.
• This will help the victim regain composure without embarrassment.
3. Advise witnesses to avoid talking to the media and to give their names and addresses only to law
enforcement and bank officials.
4. Distribute Ident-A-Cards to all witnesses.
• Instruct them to fill out the forms completely before discussing the robbery with anyone.
5.
After the witnesses have completed the Ident-A-Cards, have them individually review the Weapons
Recognition Chart to further identify the weapon used.
• Have witnesses note any additional information which comes to mind after reviewing the chart, but do not
erase their first descriptions of the weapon.
6. Discuss the robbery only with designated law enforcement and bank officials.
7. Fill out an Ident-A-Card description of the robber.

Steps to follow immediately after a robbery.
1.
Secure physical evidence.
• Rope or block off all areas in which the robber might have moved.
• Prevent anyone from touching objects the robber might have handled. Be aware of possible
fingerprints at the teller counter and building door.
2.
Secure any remaining currency and valuables.
• Make sure all tellers have closed their lines and locked their cash drawers.
• Keep areas around vaults, safes and teller lines clear of unauthorized personnel.
3.
Protect surveillance camera and film until police arrive.
4.
Keep telephone lines clear for law enforcement officials and emergency services.
5.
Discuss the robbery only with designated law enforcement and bank officials.
6.
Fill out an Ident-A-Card description of the robber.

All Unassigned Tellers
Steps to follow immediately after a robbery.
1. Remain at your station.
2. Secure all remaining currency and valuables.
• Complete any transaction in process and inform all other members that you are
temporarily closed.
• Lock your cash drawers.
3. Protect physical evidence.
• Rope or block off areas around your station where the robber might have been.
• Do not touch any object the robber might have handled.
4.
List the names and addresses of the last few members you waited on prior to the
robbery.
• These members may have witnessed the robber's arrival.
5. Discuss the robbery only with designated law enforcement and bank officials.
6.
Fill out an Ident-A-Card description of the robber.

Publicity Guidelines
Dealing with the media after a robbery
1. Designate one official spokesperson.
• Instruct all other personnel to refrain from speaking to the media.
2. Do not allow members of the press to enter the building until after the police and FBI
have completed their investigations.
3. When the investigations are complete, allow the media access only to the lobby or other
public areas.
• Do not permit access to teller, vault or other restricted areas.
4. Respond to questions in a courteous manner, but limit the release of information.
• Do not release the names or addresses of witnesses.
• Do not allow witnesses to be photographed.
• Do not reveal the amount of money stolen. You may issue a statement that "an
undetermined amount of money has been taken."
• Do not reveal details about your security program, procedures or devices.
• Do not reveal the existence of bait money taken by the robber.
5. Do consult with local law enforcement officials before releasing any information about the
robbery to avoid hampering their investigation.
6. if there are no objections by law enforcement officials, you may release the following
information:
• Your name, title & business telephone number as official spokesperson.
• The time the robbery occurred.
• A brief statement assuring members that all deposits are insured against robbery losses.
