CRIME ALERT
2013-006
This crime alert is to inform the university community about two off-campus
incidents that occurred in a twelve hour time frame.
On Sunday, September 1, 2013, shortly after 12:00 noon, a CMU student was the
victim of a strong arm robbery that occurred at the bus stop in front of the Park
Plaza Apartments, 128 N. Craig Street. The student was waiting at the bus stop
and had his cell phone in his hand. A black male on a bicycle rode past him on
the sidewalk and grabbed the cell phone from his hand. The suspect continued
on North Craig Street and turned right on Bayard Street and was last seen turning
left onto N. Neville Street from Bayard Street. The student did not suffer any
injuries. No words were exchanged during the incident.
The suspect was described a s a black male, 19-25 y.o., medium build with short
hair. The suspect was wearing black shorts and a black t-shirt at the time of the
robbery. The victim was unable to provide a description of the bicycle.
On Monday, September 2, 2013, shortly after midnight, a CMU student was
robbed and assaulted while walking northbound in the 800 block of Devonshire
Street. The student reported that a black male approached him from behind and
asked him what time it was. The student reached into his pocket and pulled out
his cell phone and told the man what time it was. At this time, a second black
male approached and both males began to punch the student with their fists and
kick him with their feet. The student was knocked to the ground and his glasses
were knocked off. He suffered minor cuts to his mouth and face and complained
of a sore neck and shoulders; however, he opted not to be transported to the
hospital.
On the course of the robbery, the suspects stole the student’s wallet, keys, and
black Nike tennis shoes. The suspects unsuccessfully attempted to remove the
student’s pants. The suspects fled in a white sedan and were arrested by
Pittsburgh Police within 30 minutes of the incident.
Pittsburgh Police are continuing the investigation in order to identify any others
who may have been involved in this or related incidents.
This alert is to make you aware of these incidents so that you can take
precautions to help ensure your safety.

Stay close to friends and do not allow yourself or others to interact with
strangers.
Avoid using devices that impair your hearing or sight while walking.
Report any suspicious incidents, persons or vehicles to Campus Police at
412-268- 2323, or off campus to the Pittsburgh Police at 911.
