Directions: While reading this novel you will be completing a scrapbook from the
perspective of one of the characters. Pretend as though you are that character and are
living his or her life as the events unfold. Consider the events that hold major
significance throughout the novel and what motivates your character to action.
Your scrapbook needs to have the following pages in this order:

Process: Follow these directions to create your scrapbook.
1) Each page dedicated to one topic
2) Presented neatly

Schoolhouse:
 Using details from the book, draw or find a picture that represents the
schoolhouse that the children attend.
 Add two quotations from the book.
 Use in-text citation for your quotes.
Family Drawing:
 Draw a family picture that includes all members of the family.
 Draw the members in the clothes they would normally wear.
 Use color in your picture.
 Write a paragraph description of the family.
Near and Dear Items:
 Pick three items that are important to your character
 Draw or glue them on the page
 Write beneath it what makes it a keepsake for your character
Reflection on the Times
 You need to use the internet
 Include at least 2 pictures that depict social issues from the time the story takes
place
 Include 2-3 sentence captions that describe the issue in the picture
Timeline
 Research at least five events that take place around the time of the story
 Put these events in order on a timeline
 Include at least three pictures
Copy of Mom’s Diary after Losing her Job
 Put yourself in the character. Consider her feelings, thoughts, anger, and pride.
 Must be ¾-1 page in length
 Must be grammatically correct—She was a teacher.
Personal Themes
 Write 2 paragraphs about theme. Each paragraph describes how the theme is
present in the novel and gives details
 Follow the paragraph format: Topic sentence, details, closing sentence.
 Use your best writing skills for this assignment.
Newspaper Report of the Robbery
 Imagine yourself as an objective reporter asking witnesses for personal accounts
of the robbery.
 Answer the who, what, how, why, and when of the robbery.
 Make it look and sound like a news report
Diary Entry Reflecting on Childhood
 After reading the climax, reflect in the first person point of view on the events that
went down in the book.
 How did the events affect you? How did they affect your life?
 Write around one page.
Extended Story
 Using a narrative format, extend the story for one character.
 Start where the novel stops and describe what happens next.
 Must be around one page
Overall effort and neatness will be considered when grading this assignment.
