Why Come to Almaty?
Kazakhstan is among the fastest developing nations of the CIS, averaging a real GDP growth rate
of over nine percent for the last five years. The economy is driven by oil, financial services and
real estate development.
Almaty is the driving force of the nation’s economic growth. Positioned as the international
business capital of Central Asia, the city is the regional headquarters location for companies such
as the “Big Four” audit companies, international banks such as HSBC and consumer goods
companies like Proctor and Gamble, Samsung and LG.
Residents of Almaty are only 30 minutes to the north of the 20,000 foot mountains in the
Zhailisky Alatau range, a spur of the Tian Shan Mountains, and 30 minutes from the dramatic
emptiness of the vast steppe that runs north to Siberia.
Located six hours flight time from European centres, coastal China, Southeast Asia and South
Asia and four hours flight time from the increasingly influential Gulf States, Almaty is easily
accessible to all the growth centres of the rapidly changing global economic map.
Almay is a truly multinational city, with modern Western conveniences rapidly developing
alongside traditional Central Asian hospitality. Home to dozens of nationalities, Almaty
possesses a rich cultural mosaic that sets it apart from any other city in the world. As the
business centre and host to the majority of the region’s international community, Almaty has
developed the social and entertainment amenities that characterize such cities. Residents of
Almaty have access to fine dining, night clubs, classical music and cafes.

KIMEP is a phenomenon, unique in the world today. Beginning with fewer than 300 students in
1997, KIMEP has grown to more than 4500 today. Almost all classes are taught in English and
all curricula, from the undergraduate to doctoral level, match European and American standards.
KIMEP has been a fundamental factor in the development of the city as an international business
hub for the region, providing over 5,000 graduates fluent in English and modern business
methods.

KIMEP fulfils its mission by delivering education in world class facilities, including a recently
completed New Academic Building, world-class Executive Education Centre and state-of-the-art
library with extensive virtual and physical holdings. Nearly all of its current teaching facilities
have in-class internet access and multimedia capabilities. Faculty offices are comfortable and
equipped with all necessary technology.
Salaries
Salaries vary according to the level of appointment, from a minimum for an instructor of
KZT 1,849,200 to a maximum for a full professor of KZT 11,111,760 per annum.
Precise details of remuneration will be given with an offer of employment. (The current
exchange rate is US$ 1 = KZT 148. This rate may change. Salaries are in tenge and are
not pegged to the dollar.)
Housing
KIMEP offers all faculty support in securing housing and in the management of
relationships with property owners.
Average annual cost for a one-bedroom apartment in Almaty, including utilities, is
$8400.
Relocation
KIMEP pays $5000 to cover the cost of moving to Kazakhstan. (This is a single
reimbursement and is not annual.)
All employee visa and work permit costs are borne by KIMEP and the process is
managed by us.
Medical Support
KIMEP offers basic free medical insurance to all faculty members. The package can
be enhanced and extended to family members according to need.
KIMEP contracts with an international service provider for English-speaking
emergency coverage and provides on-campus services through its own medical
facilities.
Free Language Training
KIMEP offers free language training to faculty and their families in both Russian and
Kazakh through its Language Centre to help adjustment to the local environment.
While there are a growing number of English speakers in the city, some knowledge of
local languages is of great benefit.
Support for Education of Children
KIMEP offers up to $5,000 per family to support the private education of children of
foreign employees in international schools.
Support for Job Placement of Spouses/ Partners
KIMEP will make every effort to find employment for spouses/partners of faculty
either within the Institute or in the local labour market.
Subsidized Education for Spouses/ Partners
KIMEP offers a 50% subsidy to spouses / partners of faculty on its academic
programs.
