Carol Herbert - Biography
Carol Herbert completed two terms as Dean, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The
University of Western Ontario on June 30, 2010. She is Professor in the UWO Department of
Family Medicine, with cross-appointment in the Department of Pathology and Affiliate
member of the Department of Women's Studies. She was formerly Head of the UBC
Department of Family Practice, founding Head of the Division of Behavioural Medicine, and a
founder of the UBC Institute of Health Promotion Research. She was a pioneer in developing
services for sexually abused children and co-founded the Sexual Assault Service for
Vancouver. She is internationally known for her leadership in primary care research, and
particularly for participatory action research with aboriginal communities, focused on diabetes
and on environmental effects on human health. She is a recognized leader in interprofessional education and collaborative practice, womens health and mentorship of
academic women. She is a founding Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences
and Foreign Associate Member of the Institute of Medicine, U.S. National Academies of
Science. She holds honorary fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of
Glasgow and the Royal Australian College of General Practice.
