Title of Session:
Making Effective Technology Choices for Mushroom Eaters, Early Adopters, and Everyone Else
Summary of the Session (50 words or less):
As technology becomes ubiquitous all too often our students adopt and adapt new technologies
more rapidly than we do. This workshop investigates course management systems and emerging
web-based social software applications that promise to transform how we offer service, deliver
instruction and share knowledge with each other.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the strengths and weaknesses of a course management system to support the delivery of
career development services and curriculum.
Analyze a range of emerging technologies and assess the potential to improve service delivery,
instructional effectiveness and organizational management, as well as the challenges involved
with using them.
Formulate a strategy for use of these tools that is appropriate to their own campus contexts.
Instructional Methods:
Presentation and large-group discussion of research study on technology availability and
usage trends in Career Services units.
Demonstrations of course management systems and social software applications.
Discussion of case studies on usage of CMS and social software approaches in career units.
Participants will rotate between:
break-out discussions including :
 Sharing knowledge in our field via weblogs, wikis and RSS
 Digital identity and the opportunities for student’s career development
and team-based hands-on activities including:
 Practice posting to a weblog, editing a wikipage, subscribing to a weblog
in a RSS reader etc. (Each participant will have the opportunity to do one
of these things.)
 SWOT analysis for advancing technology usage in a sample careers unit
*Participants will be grouped into small teams, each with a laptop. Teams will move through the
presentations and activities together. They will also report back to the larger group on their
experiences and conclusions.

Level 1: topic of general interest, no specific experience required
Level 2: prior knowledge and experience required
Level 3: senior and experienced practitioners

online environment. He has
presented on the topic of
creating online career services
to both MWACE and
TennesseeACE. Chris is also
an MLI2005 alum and active
MWACE member.
