dialog, does it have good writing, so I don't care about special effects, and stuff like that. It just doesn't interest me, and actually I
don't like big Hollywood movies (OK) I think they're terrible.
Nitiya: Terrible!
Todd: Yeah. (OK) What kind of movies do you like?
Nitiya: I guess a lot of adventure, like the movie like "Star Gate" and The beach" and, and "The Beach" was not good but, I like
something which is so different, something which is about the universe, or something which is about rockets and stuff like that.
Todd: So you like movies that re quire... (detective movies also)... and what?
Nitiya: Detective.
Todd: Oh, detective movies. (Yeah) So you like movies that require imagination?
Nitiya: Exactly.

Reviews
Bollywood meets Hollywood – fantastic !
OK, if you don't like people breaking into song unexpectedly, don't go see this
movie - let me just say that upfront!
I went to see this re-work of my favourite
novel and thought it would be atrocious and envisaged walking out of the theatre
in disgust in advance. What I got was an explosion of colour and music,
Bollywood style, and sure some of the songs were pretty awful, but hey, there
were a few terrible numbers in Grease too, and I still love that movie!
The lead
players were all virtually unknown to me but they were perfect in their roles. The
role of Lalita (the Elizabeth role in the original book) was perfectly cast - she was
beautiful and she really held the whole movie together. And Martin Henderson
was perfect as the American version of the disdainful Mr Darcy, this time Mr Will
Darcy.
Go and see this film if you are open to something new - it really is quite
a faithful re-work of the story, and it is very entertaining.
The only people who
won't enjoy this are people who hate musicals with a passion, or people who are
purists to the original.
If you liked Chicago, then you can definitely enjoy this
one too. (That also had some dodgy old songs, but the story carried you past
those parts!)
Bring on the Bollywood!

REVIEWS
A Must-See Silent Comedy, 4 March 2002
Author: Snow Leopard from Ohio
While perhaps not as celebrated now as some of Chaplin's later features, "The
Kid" is an excellent achievement and a thoroughly enjoyable film. Charlie and
young Jackie Coogan make an entertaining and unforgettable pair, and there is a
lot of good slapstick plus a story that moves quickly and makes you want to know
what will happen. Chaplin also wrote a particularly good score for this one, and
most of the time the music sets off the action very nicely.
While it's a fairly
simple story, this is one of Chaplin's most efficiently designed movies. Every
scene either is necessary to the plot, or is very funny for its own sake, or both.
Except for Chaplin and Coogan, most of the other characters (even frequent
Chaplin leading lady Edna Purviance) are just there to advance the plot when
needed, and the two leads are allowed to carry the show, which they both do
extremely well.
"The Kid" is also impressive in that, while the story is a
sentimental one, it strikes an ideal balance, maintaining sympathy for the
characters while never overdoing it with the pathos, which Chaplin occasionally
lapsed into even in some of his greatest movies. Here, the careful balance makes
the few moments of real emotion all the more effective and memorable.
This is
one of Chaplin's very best movies by any measure. If you enjoy silent comedies,
don't miss it.

Tom: Do you go to the cinema a lot Martin?
Martin: I used to quite often, Tom, but lately I just haven't found the time or the cinemas
around here aren't quite as big here.
Tom: So, I guess you've had time to contemplate
on it. What's your favorite movie of all time? Well, my favorite movie, and the best movie
I've ever seen would have to be Seven Samurai, the story about a small peasant
village
in Japan, hired in Seven Samurai to protect it and the ensuing struggles that the
villagers had with the samurai, and the Samurai did with themselves and then the final
fight that they has with the bandits
that were trying to take the peasants grain. It's a magnificent story.
Martin: It's a classic. It's black and white, right?
Tom: Yes, it is. It was made by the Japanese director Akira Kurasawa. I think it was
1956 or 57, but it's affected so many other movies, Tom.
Martin: I mean if you look at the Magnificent Seven, the Western, it's modeled directly
after that, as well as some other modern movies that you might not think as much about.
Roger Corman's, Battle Beyond the Stars with George Peppard (Are you serious?) was
modeled straight off of Seven Samurai, and even Bug's Life.
Tom: Wow. Now that I think of that I can see that.
Martin: Yeah, it's a really important movie.
Martin: How about you Tom? What's your favorite movie of all time?
Tom: I don't know about of old time, but recently, and don't laugh when I say this,
Pirates of the Caribbean was an absolute masterpiece. I saw the trailer
so many times in the cinema and just thought it was going to be rubbish, but when I
eventually got around to seeing it, it was full of good jokes and it was Jonny Depp as a
pirate going around the Caribbean. There was a ghost story. There was a love story in
it. There was a young man who'd run away to join the Pirate's. The whole thing was just
action packed, funny and colorful. It was a really entertaining movie.
Martin: Yeah, I would agree with you Tom. It was very fun and Johnny Depp was great,
modelling Keith Richards as a pirate. I think that...
Tom: Well, I heard that he was modelling the original ride at Disneyland.
Martin: Oh, really.
Tom: The mechanical models jerking around
on the pirate ship, the mannequins, I heard that was what he modeled his character on.
Martin: I heard he modeled after Keith Richards.
Tom: He's the kind of actor who comes up with a different story at every interview.
Martin: Well, I guess that's why he's acting.

Mari: OK, next, do you go to the movies? How often do you go to the movies?
Ron: I don't go to the movies very often, maybe twice a year, I would say.
Mari: That's it?
Ron: Yeah.
Mari: Do you rent movies?
Ron: I rent movies more than I go to the cinema, but also not very often.
Mari: What kind of movies do you like?
Ron: I like funny movies. Comedies.
Mari: Comedies. What's the most recent movie you watched?
Ron: I watched Home Alone last night but it was on TV. I didn't rent the movie.
