Justification:
Why is this position necessary?
To support a growing Visual Arts program by maintaining and providing assistance in the studios of
the 900 and 1000 buildings. Allowing for additional class offerings and lab hours during the evenings
and on Fridays. And to maintain visual arts laboratory standards as described by the National
Association for Schools of Art and Design.
What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request
relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations?
The Instructional Assistant will support following programs in the AHSS division: Studio Art,
Photography, Interior Design, and Architecture. College's Strtegic Plan states: "Increase the number of
students that acheive their educational goals within a reasonable time by clairifying pathways and by
providing more information and support." This position will support student success by allowing more
access to required equipment, in addition to tutoring and one-on-one instruction. The additional
support provided by the Lab Technician will allow our Visual Arts program to meet the Accreditation
Standards for classroom instruction as defined by the National Association for Arts and Design.
Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs
to be considered?
This position is shared by Studio Art, Photography, Architecture, Interior Design, Digital Media. The
position will report directly to Division Dean.
What is the consequence of not funding this position?
Currently the Visual Arts Programs are unable to provide additional lab and studio hours for students
to work outside of class time. Additioanally, the Visual Arts Programs are currently running at capacity
and the Laboratory Technician is essential to provide sustainable program growth. We will not be able
to effectively meet student needs.
What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request?
Currently the Visual Arts Faculty scramble to bridge the gaps with uneven success, highlighting the
need for additional assitance in the studios and labs. With limited techinical support in the studio
faculty attention is often averted away from the students to focus on the laboratory. In order to
increase teaching efficiency, these responsibilities would be better managed by a Laboratory
Technician.
How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this
position?
The quality of one-on-one instruction increases when the instructor has assistance. The growing
number of at risk students needs will be better served.
What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students?
There are no personnel currently assisting these students or the program.
