Justification:
Why is this position necessary?
To support a growing Visual Arts program providing assistance through assisting instructional labs and
studios in the 900 and 1000 buildings. Allowing for additional support for class offerings and lab hours
during the evenings and on Fridays. Providing tutoring and one-on-one instruction to students during
class time and during lab hours. And to maintain visual arts laboratory standards as described by the
National Association for Schools of Art & Design.
What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request
relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations?
The Instructional Assistant will support following programs in the AHSS division: Studio Art,
Photography, Interior Design, and Architecture. College's Strategic Plan states: "Increase the number
of students that acheive their educationsl goals within a reasonable time by clairifying pathways and
by providing more information and support". This position will support student success by allowing
more access to required equipment, in addition to tutoring and one-on-one intruction. The additional
support provided by the Insturctional Assitant will allow our Visuals Arts Program to meet the
Accreditaion Standards for classroom instruction as defined by National Association for Arts and
Design.
Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs
to be considered?
This position is shared by Studio Art, Photography, Architecture, Interior Design, Digital Media. The
position will report directly to Divsion Dean.
What is the consequence of not funding this position?
Currently Visual Arts Programs are unable to provide additional lab and studio hours for students to
work outside of class time. Additionally, the Visual Arts Programs are currently runing at capacity and
the Instructional Assistance is essential to provide sustain program growth. Without this position, will
not be able to effectively meet student needs.
What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request?
Currently Visual Arts Faculty scramble to bridge the gaps with uneven success, highlighting the need
for further assitance in studios and labs. With limited laboratory assistance in the classroom attention
is often averted away from students to focus on the laboratory. These requirements displace
classroom instruction. In order to increase efficiency, these additional requirements would better be
managed by a Instructional Assistant. The ability to have access to labs after hours is limited because
of the additional time requirement on faculty.
How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this
position?
Access to additioanl open lab hours qill provide students with the appropriate lab time required for
success in the Arts. The quality of one-on-one instruction increases when the instructor has
assistance. The growing number of at risk students needs will be better served.
What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students?
There are no personnel currently assisting these students or the program.
