January 28th, 2012 Bellringer: 1. What are the three types of cell division? Binary fission, Mitosis, and Meiosis 2. How do these three compare and contrast? Mitosis = asexual reproduction, somatic (body) cells, makes 2 identical diploid cells Meiosis = sexual reproduction, germ (sex) cells, makes 4 different haploid cells 3. What are the phases of mitosis? Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase 4. What are the 8 phases of meiosis? Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telophase I, Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II, and Telophase II 5. When does synapsis occur? Synapsis occurs during Prophase I of meiosis, and is where the homologous chromosomes pair up. 6. What are homologous chromosomes? Pairs of identical chromosomes 7. What occurs during crossing over? Homologous chromosomes exchange genetic information. 8. What is nondisjunction, and when does it occur? Homologous chromosomes, or sister chromatids fail to separate during anaphase I or II of meiosis. DLT: I can apply my knowledge of both mitosis and meiosis in order to review these processes and do well on the mitosis and meiosis quiz. Today: 1. Review bellringer 2. Mitosis and Meiosis Review sheets in pairs 3. Mitosis and Meiosis quiz (Unit 5, Quiz 3) a. 20 Multiple choice questions 4. Review quiz
