It’s another edition of Royal Holloway’s only vaguely magical newsletter. Hooray!! We’re only half way through the term and we hope you’ve enjoyed what’s been going on thus far. Once again we want people to send us their submissions but we’re also very excited to announce that we’re holding a writing competition so please read on to find out more about that!! (Also carry on reading for news of what’s coming up as well as submissions from our members) A bit more: I love learning but I am the biggest procrastinator in the world and will almost invariably wait to the last minute to cram the night before. I've been a lifeguard, a summer camp counsellor, and a horseback riding instructor. I have an unhealthy addiction to Mini Cheddars and boy bands. I can play a little guitar and I sing in the shower/car. If I could have one super power, I'd want to time travel. Hufflepuff Prefects For those of you at sorting, you’ll know that we elected our prefects. These are unofficial committee prefects and they are here to encourage your house pride! Here they are: Gryffindor Name: Amanda Hudson Subject: Joint Honours BA in English and Creative Writing Favourite Character: Ginny Weasley Patronus: Wolf Favourite Spell: Patronus Charm Name: Laura Hughes Subject: Computer Science Favourite Character: Luna Lovegood Patronus: puffin Favourite Spell: Lumos A bit more: I love reading, TV, Netflix and badminton. I visited Royal Holloway on an open day and decided that I really really wanted to go somewhere that looked like hogwarts (and the computing course here was pretty good too!) Ravenclaw nesquik chocolate milkshake and a packet of Red Vines! (Gotta get back to Hogwarts) Name: Alicia Zieman Subject: MSc in Information Security (ISG) Favourite Character: Luna Lovegood or Hermoine Patronus: phoenix Favourite Spell: Patronus Charm or Alohomora A bit more: I completed my Bsc Hons and Higher National Diploma both from Kingston University London. Before that I went to Richmond the American University in London which I left because they cancelled my degree. I worked for Target on the retail side during the data breach... Slytherin Name: Lauren Hensey Subject: Drama and Theatre Studies Favourite Character: Draco Malfoy Patronus: Fox Favourite Spell: Wingardium Leviosa A bit more: I'm in my first year at Uni, and currently living in Founders! My favourite films are Dead Poet Society and the Back to the Future Trilogy. My best past time is watching YouTube with a Quiz Night Next Thursday (19th November) we are holding our first quiz night of the year. It will be held in Imagine (the place with the bubble tea) at 8pm. Please come in teams of roughly four for an evening of ‘wellmannered frivolity’. We will also be asking for a donation of around £1 per person for the Malala fund which is our chosen charity this year. If you want to take part in the Triwizard tournament, please remember that the quiz evening is doubling up as the first round (we couldn’t get dragons) so just let us know on the day that you want to take part and we’ll make sure we record your points. Writing Competition News of great excitement! We are going to be running a writing competition this term. This is largely to encourage submissions for the Daily Prophet but also because we’re keen to read what you have to say. There are two categories; fiction and nonfiction and they just need to be related to Harry and his world in some way – the more creative the better. In order to enter, you need to have paid your membership (we will be checking) but then you just need to email us your submissions at HarryPotterSoc@su.rhul.ac.uk. Any submission for the Daily Prophet sent in by a member will be included in the competition unless you state otherwise and all submissions will be published in here at some point! The judging panel will also include a published author which is exciting Finally, and most importantly, the prize for the best entry in each category is a Yule Ball ticket and two drinks for when you’re there!! Entries are welcome until the end of term and winners will be announced at the beginning of next term Walking Tour Firstly I’d like to apologise for the cancellation of the walking tour the other week. It was flattering though to know that some of you were disappointed by this. It was also nice to get to you know in Café Nero even if it was only in Egham. However, GOOD NEWS! It is being rescheduled for the 21st of November and at the time of writing there are no engineering works. So, as before, meet at 9:40 at Egham train station with a pack lunch and sensible shoes for a day of Harry Potter exploration Sorting Thanks to everyone who came to the Sorting Ceremony! It was great to see everyone decked out in their house colours and showing support for their house. We had a great time and we hope you did too. For those of you who couldn’t make it, we will be having another Sorting Ceremony next term, so make sure to send us your name and house by then. Emma Dean, Treasurer Update on the Warner Bros Studio Tour Trip!!! Hi Everyone!! Following the outcome of the vote, the Studios Tour will happen on a Saturday. We are currently looking at dates in February, but are really close to booking them, so a date shall be with you shortly!! Tickets will be sold via the SU website, and as you are aware, anyone can buy those. So I would urge you to keep an eye out for the release date, wouldn’t want anyone missing out! We will post on our Facebook group the evening before they go up, just to give you all a heads up. Tickets would cost £30-£35 each (apologies for the slightly imprecise price, we are still waiting on travel arrangements). It is open to members and non-members, so if you have friends who aren’t part of the society but still want to come then that’s fine. It’s an amazing day out; we’ve enjoyed it immensely the past two years. Updates to follow shortly!! Lucy Gatford, Events Officer The man behind the smile – An interview with Gilderoy Lockhart A household name across the wizarding nation, Gilderoy Lockhart is no ordinary wizard. He’s had a break with a banshee, a holiday with hags, and is currently revelling in the success of his newest work; Magical Me. It’s enjoying its thirteenth week atop the Daily Prophet bestsellers list, and Gilderoy cannot be more pleased to tell us about his exciting life. After a brief introduction and some lovely ice cream (courtesy of Florean Fortescue’s), the questions are fired away. Gilderoy, how are you finding the popularity of your first autobiography? Smirking with his award winning smile, he replies “What can I say? Given the appreciation of my previous works and the support of my loving fans I’m not surprised to see my book do well. I’ll be visiting Flourish and Blotts’ this week for a book signing, be sure to come along to hear more on my newest method of de-gnoming your garden.” What will be discovered in your newest works? Leaning forward, he says “The book will follow my ascent from an already savvy 1st year Ravenclaw through to a dashing 7th year, and my blossoming career afterwards. Of course one of my more famous exploits occurred shortly after the publication of Gadding with Ghouls (my 2nd bestseller), in which I was captured by trolls in the wilds of Stockton-On-Tees. A ghastly experience that I have rarely mentioned, until now! Be sure to pick up your copy of Magical Me to find out how I escaped.” Gilderoy, being an honorary member of the Dark Force Defence League, what advice can you offer to wizards and witches for protection? Giving a more quizzical look, where he shifts in his seat, he eventually replies saying “Of course given my years of experience dealing with a vast number of dark creatures, I know many spells and hexes for offensive or defensive use. The spell will change with each creature, but an obvious favourite combination is stupefy and protego. These spells will repel and deflect enemy attacks in many situations, but for more detailed descriptions on enemy weaknesses, see my collected works.” What has been your most exciting trip to date? After mentioning some nostalgic memories that any reader will know too well, he mentions “Above them all, my Year with a Yeti must be one of the most thrilling adventures I have been on. Merlin’s Beard! I spent an entire year in the Himalaya’s accompanied solely by the brilliant witch Li Yin, until her unfortunate death traversing the side of a cliff face, bless her soul. Ironically, only after her demise did I find the fabled Yeti; a lovely chap actually who is quite misunderstood and viewed as a monster. We had a whale of a time descending the mountain, in fact without his help I may not be here today so as a thank you I make sure to visit him every year.” And finally, Mr. Lockhart, what great journey lies ahead for you? Eagerly, he announces “With a slight change of plan, I am delighted to reveal that this year I will be teaching Defence against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Personally invited by Dumbledore himself of course, I look forward to showing the eager students how an experienced Ravenclaw was so able to protect himself in the wild and against the forces of evil. However, fear not my adoring fans, as the forbidden forest is close by and I will spend countless hours in there documenting the unknown wildlife. Who knows what truly lurks in the forest? Keep your eyes peeled for my next bestseller unveiling the mystery of the forest, and for now, goodbye!” Thank you Gilderoy for the enthralling discussion of your many travels, you never to fail all of us here at the Daily Prophet. Remember dear readers that he will be appearing at Flourish and Blotts’ next Wednesday to sign his autobiography “Magical Me” as well as advertising his complete collected works, so attentively keep your floo powder at the ready!
