STARS SUMMER Stars Summer Program Newsletter PROGRAM June 13, 2013 Week 1 Newsletter What are we up to at STARS? Week One Clubs Clubs are activities chosen by the kids, according to their interest. Each child picks their top three choices, and they are placed in two of the three clubs. Each club is led by an adult with knowledge in the field they are working in. Art Club-This week in Art club, the students made Shrinkie Dinks, learned how to make friendship bracelets, made flower pens and pipe cleaner animals. They also used tempra paint and plaster of paris to create their own sidewalk chalk. Animal Club-In animal club, the kids made an owl craft, guessed what animal was what based on a description, learned about animals with layers of blubber, and created their own new animals on www.switchzoo.com Board Game Club- The students tried a variety of board games including Jenga, Farkle, Go Fish, Chess, Life on the Farm and Allowance. Many other games were played as well Spanish Club- In Spanish, the kids worked on learning basic Spanish greetings, their number 1-10 (at least) and basic colors. They played lots of games to reinforce these concepts. Spark Club-This club is an outdoor physical activity club. The students played many games including:” Spud”, “Shark, Shark”, “Frogger”, “Marble Football”, and Tag games. In Spark, the kids have to work together to make all the games work! Academic Time In Academic Time, the students work on academic skills they will need during the school year. Kindergartners work on basic skills, and the older kids reinforce school skills already learned. Here is a snapshot about the concepts your children have been working on. Kindergarten: Kindergarten worked on weather, the ABCs, and Adding/Subtracting. They also did several Dr. Seuss Activities First Grade: Students worked on money, time, and letters. They played lots of games to reinforce these concepts Second Grade: In second grade, they celebrated animal week. Each day they learned about a different animal, in addition to reading and working on other academic skills Third Grade: Third grade worked a lot on multiplication facts this week. They also focused on reading, both silently and out loud. Fourth grade: Fourth grade worked a lot of prefix/suffix concepts.
