Geometry B www.AdvancedAcademics.com Course Description Geometry B, the second course in a two-semester series, builds on the logic and basic elements of geometry to examine ratios, proportions, and similar figures. The course includes studies of circles, trigonometric ratios, solid geometric figures, coordinate geometry, and transformational geometry. Students will be prepared to advance to special topics like Algebra II and trigonometry. Course Objectives When you finish this course, you will be able to: Use the laws of similar figures and proportions to find missing parts, perimeters, areas, and volumes of similar figures Use properties of radii, diameters, chords, secants, tangents, and arcs of circles to solve problems Find the circumference and area of a circle Use the Pythagorean theorem and trigonometric ratios to find missing parts of right triangles Calculate the surface area and volume of various three-dimensional figures Translate, reflect, rotate, and dilate two-dimensional geometric figures Course Assignment Values Assignment Type Points Possible 16 Assignments 1 Activity Weight 200 pts 10 pts 30% 2% 10 pts 1% 5 Unit Tests 240 pts 37% 1 Final Exam 197 pts 30% Course Totals 657 pts 100% 2 Graded Discussions Suggested Course Schedule The suggested time frame shown below is based on learning sessions. A learning session is a 45-minute period of time. This course should take approximately 90 learning sessions to complete, but this schedule is just a suggestion. You may work on each unit at your own pace, completing as many learning sessions as you’d like in one sitting. However, keep in mind that you must finish the entire course within the time specified by your school district. ©2011 Advanced Academics, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Learning Session 1-20 21-40 41-54 Content Covered Unit 1: Similarity Have you seen scale drawings or maps that are drawn to scale? Proportionality is used to make these. You will work on this skill in this unit. In this unit, there will be: 4 Assignments 50 pts 1 Graded Discussion 5 pts 1 Unit Test 50 pts Unit 2: Circles Did you know that all circles have a constant ratio between their circumferences and diameters? Every time you divide the circumference by its diameter, you will get approximately 3.14. You will explore this and other properties of circles and their segments in this unit. In this unit, there will be: 4 Assignments 50 pts 1 Unit Test 50 pts Unit 3: Right Triangles and Trigonometry If you are given two sides of a right triangle, can you find the measure of the other side? What about the interior angles? You will be studying the special properties of right triangles and how to use those properties to solve angle and distance problems. In this unit, there will be: 3 Assignments 35 pts 1 Unit Test 50 pts 57-76 Unit 4: Surface Area and Volume Could you calculate how much paint you need to paint a cube-shaped room? What if it was shaped like a pyramid? In this unit, you will be studying the volume and surface area of solid objects. In this unit, there will be: 3 Assignments 40 pts 1 Unit Test 50 pts 77-88 Unit 5: Transformations If you look at an image in a mirror, does it stay the same size? In this unit ©2011 Advanced Academics, Inc.
