PART 1 - Find & read science news articles
1. Read the news each week and find ONE news article that is science based and
interest you. Use the list of sources below as a starting point
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/science/index.html
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science_and_environment/
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/
http://www.futurity.org/
http://www.sciencenews.org/
http://www.sciencedaily.com/
2. Make sure the publication date is for that current week.
NOTE: IB Biology encompasses a wide variety of topics and thus your chosen
articles need to reflect the scope of the curriculum. You will need to find articles
that fit into each of the areas of focus in the first year of the course.
These areas are:
Cell Biology
Molecular Biology
Genetics and Evolution
Nucleic Acids & Biotechnology
Evolution and Biodiversity
PART 2 - Post to Edmodo (10 points per week)
Using the link feature, post a link to your news article. In the text box, summarize
& critique the article up for discussion. Use the following format. (Hint: You may
want to first type it up in a word processing application such as Google docs, Word
or Pages and then paste the text into the box)
Abstract: Summarize the main idea of the article in 100-150 words.
Critique: Thoughtful commentary about the article that you chose. Limited to 150250 words.
Bad: It was cool..
Better: I thought it was interesting that…
Best: I wish the author had further discussed…
PART 3 - Edmodo Discussion (3 replies x 2 points per reply = 6 points per week)
Respond to the commentaries posted by your classmates. Your responses should:
1. Be posted in a way which is consistent with “academic writing”.
2. Avoid posts containing only smilies, greetings, thank you or other personal
messages.
3. Be limited to 75-150 words.
