MS/HS FRENCH 3 SYLLABUS GRADES 9 & 10 Teacher: Juliet Farmer Room: 405 Contact: jfarmer@scischina.org HW Website: http://students.scisdragons.net/jfarmer/ Course Description: This course is designed for students entering their third or fourth year of study of the French language and aims to further proficiency in the four skills of language learning; speaking, listening, reading and writing using a wide range of authentic materials. Students will participate in a variety of activities and projects that encourage extended written and spoken responses using more creative language and complex grammatical structures. Aspects of the Francophone world with its varied customs and points of interest will be included in the course. Due to the different ages and abilities of the group, different materials and tasks may be set, encouraging each individual to work at their own level. Participation Full participation is expected as part of your learning experience and evaluation. To avoid distractions, laptops should only be open when requested by the teacher. Homework Homework is given as a means to support and extend classroom-based learning. The amount of homework given will vary depending on the unit of study as well as each student’s ability to utilise class time efficiently. All homework will be posted on my website so that in the case of absence, a student will still be able to complete the homework. Parents are encouraged to check the website regularly in order to be aware of what is expected of the students. If homework is not handed in on time it will be held as missing and at zero until the work is received. Any student who plagiarises work or is strongly suspected to have used a translator, will be given zero for an assignment. Listening and Speaking Writing Reading Unit Tests/Quizzes/Finals 20% 30% 30% 20% Assessment: Tasks set in the classroom will assess all four primary skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Participation during the task will be assessed as well as the final submitted piece. Tasks will be assessed according to a rubric with descriptors based on the Ab Initio IB assessment criteria for language, message and format. Assessment tasks include, but are not limited to: LISTENING: Listening to and responding to a song/ poem/ speech/ film extract/interview etc. SPEAKING: Description of a picture, oral debate, question/answer, presentation, survey, interview, speech, discussion, role-play. READING: Comprehension and analysis of a variety of texts. WRITING: Writing in different styles and registers for a variety of purposes including articles, blogs, letters (formal and informal), speeches and diary entries. 3 Homework : Homework tasks will assess all four primary skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Tasks set will include several of the kind listed above and all will be posted on my website http://students.scisdragons.net/jfarmer/. Students should expect to be assigned homework for every class in addition to the long-term written assessment project. These assignments and projects must be handed in the day they are due and must be written legibly. Students are automatically expected to study all new vocabulary and grammar the day it is introduced and may be quizzed on it the following class.
