EVALUATION TECHNIQUES Your grade will depend upon the points you earn in the areas listed below: Homework: Tests: Final Exam: Extra Credit: Total Point Basis for Course 100 points 2 @ 100 points each 100 points 50 points 25 % 50 % 25 % 400 points Homework Homework will be assigned through the Hawkes Learning Systems (HLS) Beginning Statistics software. This online system includes Lessons consisting of textbook based Learning material, Practice exercises, and a Certify exercise requirement corresponding to sections of the textbook. HLS system will grade each lesson Certification exercise as soon as you complete it. You do not need to turn in any homework to the instructor. The Hawkes website is http://www.hawkeslearning.com/ . The Hawkes Course ID is: TulsaCCBegSTAT. (Beginning Statistics) Our specific course online gradebook is identified on HLS under Instructor: Jim Novotnak Section: Math_2193_206_201610_ You may want to copy/print all lesson “Certifications” for your records. Your instructor should be able to see your Certifications online, but feel free to email these Certifications to the instructor. (Printing to a .pdf or .xps file is a convenient way to save and email these documents.) There are a total of 42 HLS lessons for this course on line. You can earn up to the full 100 points allotted for Homework by completing the Certification requirement on any 28 lessons of your choosing. You can see your scores and progress through the HLS system as you complete lessons, and the Blackboard Grade Book will occasionally be updated showing your points earned. Lesson Certification assignments have specific due dates which are based on our schedule through the course. You can work on assignments after the due date, but doing the homework as the course proceeds will best prepare you for the tests and final exam. Tests There will be 2 tests over the course of the semester, one for chapters 1-7, and one for chapters 8-11. Each is worth 100 points (25%) of your course grade. See the calendar at the end of the syllabus for dates. Final Exam There will be a comprehensive final exam covering chapters 1-12 in class on paper. It is worth 100 points (25%) of your course grade. All tests and the exam are open book and notes. You will not be allowed to use laptops, tablets, or classmates’ help during tests. Calculators are strongly recommended, but not shared. You should be familiar with using the “Formulas and Tables” handout from the textbook (and posted on Blackboard). You will enter your answers on the test paper itself, and they should be clearly identified by being circled. You may want to bring scratch paper to work the problems. You can turn in your scratch paper and possibly get partial credit for questions you did not get correct, if your work is partially correct and readable. Extra Credit You can earn up to 50 points of extra credit for the course by completing any lesson Certifications exceeding 28, up to the total of 42. Grading Scale Your final grade will be based upon the percentage score you have accumulated. A: B: C: D: F: 89.5 – 100% 79.5 – 89.4% 69.5 – 79.4% 59.5 – 69.4% 0 – 59.4% MAKE-UP AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS POLICY Tests can be made-up, if a valid reason for missing the test is given to the instructor within 24 hours of the date the test was given. Any make-up tests must be completed within one week of the original, scheduled date (or before the final exam); exact dates will vary. The Final Exam cannot be made-up. ATTENDANCE Attendance and class participation are necessary in math classes and are expected by your instructor. A daily record of attendance will be kept.
