AIS Taught Postgraduate
Programmes For HSE students
Brief overview of the Department of
Asian and International Studies
The department's mission is to explore Asia,
conducting research and teaching at the highest
international levels. Our faculty generate new
knowledge of socio-political, economic and cultural
processes of change in Asian countries, situating
these changes in the broader international context.
With backgrounds in Anthropology, History, Political
Science, and Sociology, the department takes crossdisciplinary approaches to key questions about
gender, the environment, globalization, international
development, migration and cities, political change,
religion and security. Twenty-two languages are
spoken in the department, with most academic staff
conducting research in more than one language.
The department combines comprehensive
undergraduate teaching with an outstanding set of
postgraduate Master's and PhD programmes.

Master of Social Sciences in
Development Studies
發展研究社會科學碩士
Commenced in the Fall 2006, this is
a self-financed programme for
practitioners, educators, staff in
NGOs, media, and government, and
persons working for large
international organizations which
operate in Asian societies, or which
deal with Asian development issues.
Enrolled in Hong Kong's only
programme in Development Studies,
students could develop expertise on
human rights, social movements,
global institutions, policy-making,
gender, ethnicity, labour and
environment, as well as to build
capacity to advocate policy changes
and to implement development
projects.
Master of Arts in International
Studies 國際研究文學碩士
The Programme , commencing in
2010, is the first and the ONLY one
of its kind in Hong Kong that
develops expertise on issues of Asian
and International Studies. This is an
essential skill for anyone who wants
to understand the future and forge
an international, successful career.
This Programme positions students
to better comprehend and manage
future challenges and issues - either
in Asia or in other parts of the world.
The Programme caters to local
students as well as overseas
students from both developed and
developing countries, both within
the region and elsewhere. You will
be taught by a group of Asian and
International scholars who have
research and teaching expertise as
well as in-country professional
experience.
Master of Arts in Modern Asian
Studies
現代亞洲研究文學碩士
The Department of Asian and
International Studies (AIS) in the
College of Liberal Arts and Social
Sciences of the City University of
Hong Kong is planning to launch
a postgraduate degree focusing
on Modern Asia in the academic
year 2014-15. The one year fulltime or two year part-time
postgraduate degree will equip
students with essential skills in
understanding Asia as a region,
keeping in sight its sub-regional
dynamics, and its relation to an
increasingly interconnected
world. Successful completion of
this programme, to be taught by
internationally recognised
faculty, will enable students to
navigate future professional,
policy or academic challenges
with greater knowledge,
confidence and skill.
