College Algebra/Trigonometry
Course Syllabus
Teacher: Mrs. Kelly Lukareski
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is the fourth course in the college preparatory mathematics sequence. Units of study
include linear equations, polynomials, rational functions, conics, exponential and
logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, linear programming, and sequences and
series.
Technological tools, such as the TI graphing calculator, will be used for both discovery
and problem solving.
Classroom sets of graphing calculators will be provided.
Students will be expected to bring/purchase a _TI-30 XIIS or TI-83/84__
scientific/graphing calculator to class on a daily basis.
ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
There are various methods to determine the roots of polynomial functions, the
graphs of which have specific shapes
Rational functions are ratios of polynomials, have points of discontinuity, and
some solutions are extraneous
Exponential functions increase or decrease rapidly, and their inverse is
logarithms
Creating a parabola, circle, ellipse or hyperbola requires specific technical
components and exist in the real world.
The graphs of the sine and cosine functions are related to the unit circle
There are logical steps that are taken to solve problems involving trigonometric
identities.

PREREQUISITES
This course is for students who have passed Algebra 2 with an A, B, or C, and
students who passed Honors Algebra 2 with a C or D.
Textbook and Additional Materials
In addition to the textbook, students will be required to have the following materials:
 Notebook: You will be required to maintain a notebook which will be
looked at and may be graded periodically. All notes taken during class
should be kept in this notebook.
 Pencils: All math homework should be completed in pencil.
 Paper: You should have clean loose-leaf paper at all times.
 Calculator: Minimally, you will be expected to bring a Texas
Instruments TI-30 scientific calculator to class every day. If you have a
graphing calculator, this would be a better choice.
 Daily Planner: Assignments should be written daily in a planner. You
will be checked periodically and given extra credit for bringing your
planner to class.
Student Expectations
In order to have a safe and productive classroom, the following will be expected of each
student:

Be on time and in your assigned seat when the bell rings.
Be prepared for class.
Participate in classroom discussion by raising your hand.
Take notes when they are given.
Do your own work. Cheating will not be tolerated and will be punished in
accordance with District 228 guidelines.
Cell phones should not be visible or turned on during the school day.
They will be confiscated and turned into the Dean’s Office.
No eating or drinking in the classroom. Please keep the room neat! There
should not be anything on the floor when you leave.
Passes will not be given to leave the classroom unless it is an emergency.
Respect yourself and others.
Do not read or write notes during class. These notes will be confiscated!
Do not work on another subject during class. This work will be taken
away immediately and may not be returned to you.
Remain in your assigned seat until the bell rings.
All rules in the Student Handbook will be strictly enforced.
Grading Policy
Grades: All assignments, notes, tests, and quizzes will be graded on a point system. The
following grading scale will be used:
A = 90 – 100
B = 80 – 89
C = 70 – 79
D = 60 – 69
E = 59 and below
Grade reports will be given to you periodically to track your progress. The semester
grade will include three parts, including the 1st quarter grade (40%), 2nd quarter grade
(40%), and the final exam grade (20%).
Homework: Homework will be assigned each day. All assignments are due at the
beginning of the next class and will be graded at this time. No late assignments will be
accepted!! Any assignments that are turned in should be clearly labeled with your full
name, class, period, and assignment.
Absences: If you are absent on the day an assignment is collected, it is due the day you
return. If you are absent the day before a test or quiz, you are still responsible for taking
the test on the day in which you return. It is your responsibility to contact me for any
missed assignments the day you return and complete them in the required time. A
Homework Assignment sheet will be posted at the front of the class each week and
updated daily. Any unexcused absences will result in zeros for any missed work.
