The Epistle November, 2013 Brothers and Sisters in Jesus, On the first Sunday in November, we celebrate All Saint’s Sunday. It is on this day we remember loved ones who have died and gone on to their eternal reward. As I get older, I find myself checking the obituary every day, not looking for my name, but checking the ages of those listed. As I contemplate what might or might not be in my future, it seems only natural to think about the past and loved ones who have gone on to their reward. Of course, I especially think of those alive today whom I love and it leads me to ponder what could be ahead at the next stage of life. One thing we all can be sure of is that one day we must all take that journey to Jesus. The works of John 14:3 give us the comfort that we will never be alone The life expectancy has steadily increased now; 80’s and 90’s are common. We are staying healthier, if we take care of our-selves, as we get older. We may live longer now but God provides us with only this one day. We read in Psalm: 118:24 “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” God promises us only today, and because He extends no promise that we will even be alive tomorrow, we should live this day without regret, being kind to others and forgiving, seeking God’s will for this day while mindful that there is no promise of tomorrow. No matter how old we are, we should want to cherish each day as a valuable gift from God. I therefore have a stewardship responsibility to carefully consider: What is a good use of the time * have left? I look forward with anticipation to the future, not worrying about possessions, but what exciting tasks God is going to give me to do. My intent and hope is that whenever my last day finally arrives, I will be able in good conscience to say as Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 417 Howertown Rd, Catasauqua, PA 18032 610-264-3221 Fax: 610-264-5732 Email:stpaulschurch@rcn.com Web:www.stpaulscatasauqua.com Child Care: 610-264-0190 Sunday Worship 8:00 am Holy Communion 9:00 am Sunday School 10:30 am Worship 1st & 3rd Sunday Holy Communion _______________________ Church Office Hours Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm Sunday School September-May 9:00am Child Care Center Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:30pm _______________________ Church Staff: Pastor: Rev. It is a Sunday that we remember all our loved ones who have joined God in what the church calls “The Church Triumphant” meaning heaven. We are told in Hebrews that the Saints gather and watch us when we worship and other actions. The hymn we always sing this Sunday is the hymn “For all the Saint’s.” It was written by William Walsham How in 1864. This hymn has eight verses but as your listen to the words, you hear a story about the saints and their journey to heaven. It is an inspiring, uplifting hymn. It raises our spirits as we sing it. For All the Saints 1. For all the saints who from their labors rest, all who by faith before the world confessed, your name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! 2. You were their rock, their fortress, and their might; you, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight; you, in the darkness drear, their one true light. Alleluia! Alleluia! 3. Oh, may your soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old and win with them the victor’s crown of gold. Alleluia! Alleluia! 4. Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine, we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one within your great design. Alleluia! Alleluia! 5. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia! 6. The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia! 7. But then there breaks a yet more glorious day: the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia! Alleluia! 8. From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia! Alleluia! For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). The Splash Cradle Roll is a ministry for families of little ones from birth to three years of age. This program was designed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is published by Augsburg Fortress Press. It offers valuable resources for families with infants and toddlers and plays a special part during the celebration of Holy Baptism. At St. Paul’s, when a young child is baptized, he/she will be automatically enrolled in the Cradle Roll. At this time parents will receive a welcome letter into the program along with a Splash! Parent Page and a Sleepy Time Tunes CD. Each month the family will receive age appropriate mailings, called Parent Pages. Upon the child’s third birthday, Cradle Roll “graduates” will be invited to join our Three Year Old Sunday School class. Our mission is to help new families fulfill their baptismal promise and support them as they begin their journey of faith together. Jesus can teach, preach, heal, cast out demons, challenge authority and more, but still they do not comprehend. You might say it is a case of mistaken identity as the disciples and other followers seem to be hoping to discover something very different from the real Jesus., It is the criminal executed with Jesus who in his dying desperation says, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Clearly, the criminal has no other hope, still in this moment he acknowledges Jesus' true identity. Modern followers of Jesus resemble those ancient followers in many ways. Everyone has their own image of Jesus, the gifts we want Jesus to bring us, the ways we want Jesus to fix those things in our lives that cause pain or suffering. In our anxiety we want Jesus to be our magical savior. It can be frustrating when we discover a very different Jesus. Instead of one who fixes everything in an instant, Jesus is the one who walks with us through the darkest valleys. Jesus is the one who calls us to lives of service—and again and again as we care for the needs of others we discover the face of Jesus himself in the lost, the last, and the least. Our sin gets in the way, yet those who profess Jesus as Christ the King—the one in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell—are forever seeking to be clear in heart, mind, and soul about the true nature of his identity, and how we can share that identity with others. 13 14 The Epistle November, 2013 A monthly publication of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 417 Howertown Road Catasauqua, PA 18032 610-264-3221 Church Office Hours Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm Sunday School September-June 9:00am Child Care Center Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:30pm HAS ANY OF YOUR INFORMATION CHANGED RECENTLY?
