The Epistle January, 2014 Brothers and Sisters in Jesus, The turn of another year signals the passage of time and reminds us that we live within the time/space limitations set by God. Three thousand years ago, King David understood the boundaries of life on this earth when he said in Psalm 139:16 “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Nobody has an unlimited account in the bank of time. Since everyone has a finite amount of time to spend, on what should it be spent? Allow me to give you a spiritual check list of what you could do to make 2014 the best year to date. Many look forward to the New Year for a new start on changing old habits. Here’s how you can break out of the norm and take a new step forward. Before you stop reading, think about your life so far – can you do better? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Maintain a daily prayer life Spend time reading the bible daily Make practical plans to show love to your neighbor. Release someone who hurt you from their wrongdoing and tell them so. Forgive yourself and don’t turn back for another look. Choose to be thankful in every circumstance. Trust God for what you can not see. Know that suffering and trials will come, but keep going through the problems, because you are not alone. It has been said that an optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. Join the ranks of forward thinkers who are filled with hope because they know the secret of Romans 8:28 “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 417 Howertown Rd, Catasauqua, PA 18032 610-264-3221 Fax: 610-264-5732 Email:stpaulschurch@rcn.com Web:www.stpaulscatasauqua.com Child Care: 610-264-0190 Sunday Worship 8:00 am Holy Communion 9:00 am Sunday School 10:30 am Worship 1st & 3rd Sunday Holy Communion _______________________ Church Office Hours Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm Sunday School September-May 9:00am Child Care Center Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:30pm _______________________ Church Staff: Pastor: Rev. "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). The Splash Cradle Roll is a ministry for families of little ones from birth to three years of age. This program was designed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is published by Augsburg Fortress Press. It offers valuable resources for families with infants and toddlers and plays a special part during the celebration of Holy Baptism. At St. Paul’s, when a young child is baptized, he/she will be automatically enrolled in the Cradle Roll. At this time parents will receive a welcome letter into the program along with a Splash! Parent Page and a Sleepy Time Tunes CD. Each month the family will receive age appropriate mailings, called Parent Pages. Upon the child’s third birthday, Cradle Roll “graduates” will be invited to join our Three Year Old Sunday School class. Our mission is to help new families fulfill their baptismal promise and support them as they begin their journey of faith together. I want to know Thy guiding voice, to walk with Thee each day. Dear Master make me swift to hear and ready to obey. And thus the year I now begin a happy year will be— If I am seeking just to do the thing that pleaseth Thee. --Unknown Author 7 January Celebrations Jesus said, “I am the Light of the World”. Nevertheless, a newborn is a miracle to behold, filled with wonder for the world around it and desiring nothing more than to be fed, held, rocked, nurtured, and loved. The gifts of the magi direct us away from the cute, cuddly, cooing baby Jesus by pointing us to who Jesus really has come to be. The magi offer gold, a possession of kings; frankincense, used in ritual to indicate the presence of the deity; and myrrh, an oil used at the time of death as well as for anointing priests. By their gifts, the wise men reveal the identity of this child: the king before whom nations will bow, the anointed high priest of God, and the suffering servant who will die for the ones he has come to serve. The "oohs" and "ahs" we offer as we celebrate the Epiphany of Our Lord are not simply for a cooing and cuddly baby Jesus but for a God who chooses to reveal God's love and mercy by taking human form. We celebrate that God's mercy is wider and deeper than we imagined and includes all people and all nations. All people—rich or poor, Gentile or Jew, straight or gay, male or female—are God's treasure, the precious ones for whom God is willing to die. What do we bring to honor our Lord before whom we bow? We bring the treasure of our lives poured out in praise of God and in service to others. 13 The Epistle January, 2014 A monthly publication of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 417 Howertown Road Catasauqua, PA 18032 610-264-3221 Church Office Hours Monday-Friday 9:00am-3:00pm Sunday School September-June 9:00am Child Care Center Monday-Friday 7:30am-5:30pm In the New Year, may you be blessed with all the good things God has to give!
