Anatomy & Physiology Syllabus 2015-2016 School Year Instructor: Education: Mrs. Kendra Smith B.S. Chemistry Education from Northwest Missouri State University Additionally certified in Middle School General Science and High School General Science Contact: Email: ksmith@mcr4.k12.mo.us Phone: (660) 226-5615 (School office) Website: www.mcr4science.weebly.com Remind code: mcr4anat and 81010 **If you have a question for me regarding homework or class matters after school, you may send me an email. You may also start a chat with me on Remind. I am NOT promising that I will always be able to answer your questions, but I will do my best to help you through these avenues. The BEST way to get help is to find me at school, either before or after school or between classes. Not putting off your work will allow you to get help on questions before you go home, but I understand there will be times this won’t be possible. Course Objectives: By the end of this year, students should be able to do each of the following: - Explain how anatomy and physiology are related - Name the levels of structural organization that make up the human body and explain how they are related - Name the organ systems of the body and briefly state the major functions of each system - Classify by organ system all organs discussed in class - Explain the anatomical structure and location or all organs in each system - Define homeostasis and explain its importance in the human body - Use proper anatomical terminology to describe body direction, surfaces, and body planes - Describe the developmental aspects of all the body systems - Explain common diseases that affect the body systems. Prerequisites: Biology 1 Course Outline: This outline is approximate and is subject to change. SEMESTER 1 SEMESTER 2 Unit 1: The Human Body; An Orientation Unit 7: The Nervous System Unit 3: Cells and Tissues Unit 8: Special Senses Unit 4: Skin and Body Membranes Unit 10: Blood Unit 5: The Skeletal System Unit 11: Cardiovascular System Unit 6: The Muscular System Unit 14: The Digestive System and Body Metabolism Materials: Anatomy students are required to have all of the following materials for class: Pencil 3-Ring Binder or Notebook Colored Pencils Marieb’s Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology Notecards Marieb’s Anatomy and Physiology Coloring Workbook Grading: I will use the following grading practice on all your work throughout this school year; Participation – 10% Homework – 40% Quizzes and Tests – 40% Semester Cumulative Final – 10% The grading scale to the right will be effective in my classroom, as in the entire school; Extra Credit: There may be opportunities to earn extra credit throughout the school year. These opportunities may come in the form of donated materials for labs, extra work, or extra participation. These opportunities will be offered at random, and ONLY assigned by the teacher. Extra credit WILL NOT be offered to individual students who ask, only to the entire class, and on an equal opportunity basis. Finals: All students will be taking 2 cumulative finals, one at the end of each semester. These finals will test competency of all information that was covered in that semester, although it is not guaranteed that every piece of information will actually appear on the test. Students should not put off studying until the week before, but should maintain understanding of material covered throughout the course. The teacher will provide study materials at their discretion. Science Fair: We will be having a science fair again this year. This is required for all 7th through 10th grade science students. Students in 11th and 12th grades will be given the option to participate as well, but are not required to do so. The expected date for the fair is December, although that is subject to change. More details will be given out as they become available. Homework and Late Work: Anatomy is a rigorous course that will demand your full participation in assigned work. There is a tremendous amount of memorization that goes with anatomy, as well, so students will need to develop a study schedule to stay on top of the new terms. All assignments are due at the time the teacher asks for them. Any assignments that are turned in after the work is asked for are considered late. Assignments that are late but turned in before the end of that school day will receive a grade of 25% of what the student earned on the assignment. Assignments turned in the next day or later will receive a zero. Assignment Requirements: Students are expected to read and follow directions on any assignment given. Homework is to be completed in PENCIL, not ink or any other media, unless specifically told to do so. Homework not completed in pencil will receive an automatic deduction of 2 points. Students are expected to use their text and note resources before asking the teacher or a classmate. Students are responsible for checking the board each day for assignments. (Please note: If a student misses class due to a music lesson, doctor’s appointment or other reason, the student is responsible for getting any assignments in order to avoid receiving a late penalty on the following day’s assignments.) Notes: Students are required to take notes on notebook paper during lectures. Students may choose what format to use for notes. It is expected that students understand how to take notes; You should NOT be copying every word on the slide! Often, the important information is given orally by the teacher. For example – definitions from the slides are less important to copy than examples given by the teacher, and the application of the word. Cheating and Plagiarism: Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated from any student. Any attempt of a student to copy work that is not their own will result in a zero for the assignment and a discussion with the student(s). This includes copying from another student, from the textbook, an internet source, or any other work that was not their own. Students need to develop an understanding of the information they read in text, and then write that understanding in their own words, rather than copy the words from the text. This includes vocabulary definitions. Detentions: A student may be required to serve detention for poor classroom behavior, failing to complete their work for class, or other classroom disruptions. These detentions will usually take place during the lunch period, or at a time agreed upon by the teacher and administration. During a detention, students will be required to work on classwork from the time they received the detention, or work provided by the teacher. Dissections: All students will be expected to be active dissectors. It is no longer OK to be a passive participant who just looks over someone’s shoulder. We will be spending many classes throughout the second semester on various dissections. It is my expectation that you will treat each specimen with the utmost respect, anything less will not be tolerated. Attached is a permission slip for the Semester 2 dissections. Please read this over with your parent/guardian and return it to me by _____________________ Anatomy and Physiology Permission Form Macon County R-IV High School Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and Student; Your high school student has enrolled in the course Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body. I would like you to sign the ending statement and return it to the school with your student, due to the following reasons; 1) Anatomy is a highly rigorous course. Students will be required to memorize numerous vocabulary, as well as be able to label parts in the human body. It will take continuous discipline to stay on top of the content throughout this year. 2) Although I do not currently have plans to study the content at this time, students will be given an Anatomy book to use throughout the year that has anatomically correct diagrams and information in later chapters. Chapter 16 of their textbook details the anatomy of both the female and male reproductive systems, discusses the functions of each, and teaches the purpose for these systems. 3) Your student will be required to participate in the dissection of a few different specimens in the Spring semester. If you have any concerns with the information in this letter, or with any part of the class, please contact either myself or Mr. Bruner. Thank You, Kendra Smith 7-12 Science MCR-IV High School Please read and sign the following statements, then return it to Mrs. Smith. I, _________________________, agree to behave with maturity and discipline while completing the Anatomy (Print Student Name) and Physiology course. I will follow the lab safety rules set out by Mrs. Smith, and will treat all specimen with respect, and all content with maturity. I, _________________________, agree to allow my student ______________________ to complete the (Parent/Guardian) Anatomy and Physiology course. I understand the above three statements outlined by Mrs. Smith regarding the content and expectations of the course, and agree to allow my child to participate.
