Newsletter Date: 4th December 2015 School/College Name: Mabel Park State High School Liaison Name: Tracey Kilpatrick Liaison Email: tkilp9@eq.edu.au ARTICLE: PRINCIPAL’S REPORT 2015 was a phenomenal year for Mabel Park State High School. It was a year where we were acknowledged for the great things we are doing at the school. Of course I was only here for the second half of the year so when the school started winning all the awards – it was due to the great work of all the people at the school. Mabel Park State High won the School-based Apprenticeship and Traineeship Training School of the Year for South-East Queensland, then won the Spark-It Up Multicultural Dance Contest against Public and Private schools across Queensland. All these great results come from the dedication and hard-work from the staff at Mabel. I have not seen a team more committed to individual students than at this school. Other highlights for myself included the Multi-Fest and in particular the Teacher lip-sync performance. There was also the Senior Music Soiree which was a brilliant community event and one that highlighted how much heart Mabel has. Mabel Park State High School is a great school. With only 550 students it has impressed me with the facilities it has, the programs run and most importantly the individualised learning for every single student. Every teacher works exceptionally hard at this school and it is for the kids. 2016 looks like being Mabel’s best year yet with the Science and Maths Academy kicking off, The School Health Hub and the Regional Leadership Program. I feel very fortunate to work in this great school, it has been a good year with the groundwork laid for another exceptional year in 2016. Year 7 students took to it like ducks to water thanks to the extensive work Mr McNichol, Ms Nakajima and Mrs King do each year to help transition students to high school. Our Year 8 students also enjoyed their first year of high school and fit into our school seamlessly. In particular, enjoying the learning experiences in elective areas such as Music, Art, Drama, Home Economics, Business Information Technology and Manual Arts. Meanwhile, our Year 9 students led the way, taking charge of Junior Secondary assemblies and leading transition days. It has been a pleasure to see them grow into the successful young adults over the last two years and we look forward them realising their aspirations in the coming years. Whilst it has been a pleasure working with everyone in Junior Secondary; students, teachers and parents alike over the last couple of years; it is time for me to gain experience in a different school setting in 2016. I will look back on my time at Mabel Park State High School fondly and remember all the small moments that make it the best school in Logan. At the same time, I will look forward to receiving updates on the fantastic accomplishments students will continue to attain at Mabel Park State High School; with the knowledge that students will continue to be proud of our school and meet the high expectations we set as a school community. Have a safe break and enjoy the extra time with family and friends. 2016 promises to be bigger and better than ever. Thank you everyone for making my time here special. Yours sincerely Miss Schelks Deputy Principal – Junior Secondary ARTICLE: TRANSITION PROGRAM MPSHS Transition Program for Students with Disabilities Our Year 6 to Year 7 Transition program coordinated by Mrs Caple, and assisted by Mrs Dryburgh, just finished last week and what a great program it was. Over a 7 week period we had up to 14 students attend this program. The aim was to make this, often scary, transition as smooth as possible. The Transition Program provided fun learning activities on the high school campus, taking students through basic high school orientation and “show them the ropes” in a non-confrontational manner. The program was designed to ensure that students make the transition from primary school to high school with minimal anxiety and stress. During the program students visited the following elective subjects: Manual Arts, Hospitality, Art and Drama. A massive thank you goes out to Mr Hampson, Mrs Mitchell, Mr Jones and Mrs Burns for taking the time to meet with students and show them your subjects. Finally, a very special mention must be made to Mrs Caple and Mrs Dryburgh for planning and conducting such a beneficial program to our future students. Thank you!!! Regards Ms. Goodfellow ARTICLE: MATHS & SCIENCE SCIENCE ON THE GO! Presentation Thanks to Griffith University for supporting our Year 9 Science program. On Tuesday 8th September, "Science on the GO" visited the school and provided a fun and engaging presentation on such topics as sound, light and chemistry. Students conducted a range of engineering challenges that explored the strength and versatility of triangles in building. Then, students explored the school grounds to find a tall tree and measure it using a range of non-traditional methods of measuring the tree, including trigonometry and the shadow of the tree. The aim was for students to apply their theoretical knowledge to explore real-life applications. <Trig unit (1).jpg> <Trig unit (2).jpg> <Trig unit (3).jpg> <Trig unit (4).jpg> <Trig unit (5).jpg> <Trig unit (6).jpg> <Trig unit (7).jpg> <Trig unit (8).jpg> <Trig unit (9).jpg> Mabel Park Primary Year 5 Light Investigation Last week our teachers ran an investigation so that Year 5 students could complete their assessment on the topic of light. As you can hear on the videos, the room was buzzing with conversations and problem solving discussions in order to create a workable light maze box. Students were able to apply their learnings about reflection and refraction to solve this real-life problem. Well done students! <Yr 5 Maze investigation (1).JPG> <Yr 5 Maze investigation (1).MOV> <Yr 5 Maze investigation (2).JPG> <Yr 5 Maze investigation (2).MOV> <Yr 5 Maze investigation (3).JPG> <Yr 5 Maze investigation (4).JPG> <Yr 5 Maze investigation (5).jpg> <Yr 5 Maze investigation (6).jpg> Heart Dissections This term Year 11 and 12 Biology students are completing a unit investigating the human body and the requirements for life. Students were able to dissect pig and cow hearts to identify the key components of the cardiovascular systems. <IMG 4459.JPG> <IMG 4461.JPG> <IMG 4462.JPG> <IMG 4463.JPG> <IMG 4465.JPG> <IMG 4467.JPG> What goes up, must come down! Year Eight Dreamworld Excursion Miss Lubach As a part of this terms investigations into energy transfer and transformations, many year eight students attended our day out at Dreamworld. Many excited faces clambered onto the bus along with several dubious adults. However, many happy times and memories were had. Students investigated the scientific and mathematical principles of a variety of rides. From using trigonometry and theodolites to measure the angles and heights of rides, comparing inclines and the effects of speed and forces and how potential energy is transformed to kinetic energy, students were very busily moving around the park. Many rides were experienced and the effects of repetitively riding in close succession was felt by many students and even teachers, poor Mr Ford and Mr Raadts. As the clouds rolled in, we rejoined and made our way to the lolly shop. A quick stop before returning to school. This excursion was made possible by the support of many staff at Mabel Park State High School, many thanks is sent out to all that helped. <Dreamworld.png> <Dreamworld 2.png> <Dreamworld 3.png> <Dreamworld 4.png> <Dreamworld 5.png> This term, the year 7 Science students welcomed Uncle Boomerang into the classroom to teach them about Indigenous classification systems, medicines and bush tucker. We learned about foods from the local environment and how some plants can be used as tools to hunt, carry and prepare foods and medicines. In response to an Aboriginal guest visitor to the school, 7.4 then worked as a collaborative team to create an informative word wall. This was based on the resources used in Aboriginal societies for a range of purposes, including tools, weapons, utensils and food. <Word wall.png> <IMG 0494.JPG> <IMG 0483.JPG> <IMG 0511.JPG> <IMG 0518.JPG> ARTICLE: FINANCE NEWS We would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and students who paid their fees this year. ARTICLE: QUEENSLAND POLICE TRAFFIC PATROLS Keeping Our Children Safe – Increase in High Visibility Traffic Patrols The Queensland Police Service have advised that they will be increasing traffic patrols around our school over the next few weeks and have asked that we share the following information with you to avoid any unnecessary penalties and to keep our kids safe. Across the Logan District, Police are regularly contacted by schools and concerned parents in relation to inappropriate driving and behaviour’s around school zones. Speed limits, drop-off and pick-up areas and parking rules exist to keep your children, parents and carers safe. They also help to minimise speed and traffic jams around schools. Whilst we appreciate that the drop off and pick up is a particularly busy time of day it does not excuse dangerous behaviour that could come with fatal consequences. Logan Police are constantly patrolling our school zones. Some of the offences that have been witnessed are parents stopping in the middle of the road (double parking) and allowing children to get out of the vehicle, u-turns over double white lines into on-coming traffic, running red lights, speeding, unrestrained children, and road rage (use of offensive language whilst children were in the vehicle). Over the next few weeks you will see an increase in High Visibility Traffic Patrols. We are keeping our roads safe by performing proactive and targeted traffic enforcement in relation to all school zones throughout Logan. So remember the road rules and don’t break them just to save a few extra minutes. The consequences will be with you for the rest of your life. Below outlines some of the penalties which apply to traffic offences that are currently occurring within your school zone.
