UNDERLYING PHILOSOPHY

Traditionally, the mission of pharmacy practice is
to provide medications and other health care
products and services.

However in recent years the term “pharmaceutical
care” has established itself as a philosophy of
practice.
Pharmaceutical Care









The principal goal of pharmaceutical care is to achieve positive
outcomes from the use of medication that improves patients'
quality of life.
These outcomes include:
1) cure of a disease;
2) elimination or reduction of symptoms;
3) arresting or slowing a disease process;
4) prevention of disease;
5) diagnosis of disease;
6) desired alterations in physiological processes,
all with minimum risk to patients.
What Should your Philosophy be?
“as the old man walked along the
beach at dawn, he noticed a young man
ahead of him picking up starfish and
flinging them into the sea .
Finally catching up with the youth,
he asked him why he was doing this.
The answer was that the stranded starfish
would die if left in the morning sun.
‘But the beach goes on for miles and
there are millions of starfish,’ countered the Other
‘How can your effort make any difference ?’
the young man looked at the starfish in his hand
and then threw it to safety and said,
‘it makes a difference to this starfish.’ ’’
