Task 3

Different types of production

Theatre in the round
Theatre in the round is when a production is performed where the audience sit all the way
around the stage so different people in the audience can see the performance in different
ways and they also have a different experience from the other people in the audience.
Theatre in the round started with the Greeks in the 6th century BC (Before Christ). The Greeks
had festivals honouring their gods by sacrificing a goat and danced while wearing goat skins.
When the Greeks started having actors on stage, the actors, directors and dramatists were all
the same person and only 3 people were allowed on the stage at the same time.
The next time and place the Theatre in the Round was performed was in England in
medieval times and this led to the open stage. During Elizabethan times in the late 17th
century the proscenium stages took over which led to the Theatre in the round
disappearing.
Theatre in the Round had a comeback in the 1930’s because audiences at that time
preferred the stage size and theatres were larger so there was more space and more room
for audience to watch. The theatres cost less to build and maintain and ran with less staff
from stage hands to security and these theatres did not need lots of storage room as the
stage did not need as many props and lighting.
In modern days, Theatre in the Round actor’s movements are more natural and real
because there is no back stage and the actors are always on stage throughout the full
performance. This means that props are hard to change and the actors are always active.
Theatre in the Round has become more existing and spectacular by making the stage
transform in to lots of different sets by the floor rising from the ground and a new room
appearing like in Billy Elliot The Musical when Billy’s room and stars leading to the a kitchen
rise’s from the floor of the stage.


Proscenium stage
A proscenium stage is known as the window that frames the stage where
a play is being performed. The whole audience is sitting in the front of the
stage facing the stage. The actors move less on proscenium stage from
the Theatre in the Round because in Proscenium Stage they have to
perform to the front of the audience is. In a proscenium theatre you can easily hide all
props, actors and technical equipment eg lights and sound behind the wings and the fly
space.


Thrust theatre stage
The Thrust Theatre stage comes out into the audience on three sides and connects with the
back of the stage. The audience is on three sides and all have a good view.
Thrust Theatres started in Turkey with the Greeks at the amphitheatre at Hierapolis and it is
the oldest known fixed type of staging in the world. It is also used at the Old Globe Theatre
in London where Shakespeare did a lot of his works in Elizabethan times.
Props and actors entering and exiting the stage must be considered as it is important the
they do not block the view of the audience.


The audience
The audience can be different for different shows from gender to age to social groups. Like
in Shakespeare you would not find many kids there but you will find students and young to
old adults because Shakespeare is normly in old English what is hard to under stand and
normly has a deeper message. Kid and family’s normly like happy and funny shows like
pantos and musicals like what we are doing /The Little Things You Do Together/ what I think
only family, family friends, students and people who are interesting.
The audience
The play “The Little Things You Do Together” is aimed at a young adult and older audience.
Because it has songs from the past to the present and a modern culture storyline it would
appeal to many different people. I have spoken to family, friends and tutors who have said
they would like to see the production but would not bring younger children due to the
storyline content which touches on sexual relationships and contains swearing.

Marketing
Because this is a college performance I would aim my marketing at friends and family as well
as other people in the college and local area.
I have produced an A4 sized poster with the title of the show and the dates of the show.
There is a picture of wine bottles and people dancing. The print is bold in order to stand
out. I have used purple borders at the top and bottom of the poster to tie in with
Conservatoire East.
To get my friends and families attention I would post my poster on social media and ask for
it to be passed on.
I would put some posters up around the college and an advert inside my local village
newspaper. I would also produce small flyers to hand out in Bury St Edmunds as I have
done this before for charities.
