Comprehensive Exam Discussion Seminar for PhD students
The School of Social Work will hold a Comprehensive Exam discussion seminar on April 30,
2013 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at Room#326. This seminar is intended for PhD students
who will soon be writing their exam and for those currently in their first year of PhD for the
most part. This seminar is mostly student-led and meant to provide an informal, supportive
environment for students.
The rationales for holding these sessions are to discuss policies and guidelines (e.g. forming a
committee, examples of questions, etc.), to share experiences and perspectives and, hopefully,
to alleviate some of the stress our students face when going through this process. The first
meeting was held on April 2, 2013 where the logistics of the comps with regards to policies
and guidelines was reviewed.

Students Vote to Support SPF for Another Five Years
Established in 2009, McGill’s Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF) has funded some 99 green
projects across campus to date. The SPF is supported by student fees matched dollar-for-dollar
by the McGill administration and has raised $2.9 million for projects that address everything
4
from energy savings to social justice. In a recent referendum, both the undergraduate Students’
Society of McGill University and the Macdonald Campus Students’ Society voted by
overwhelming margins (88 per cent and 78 per cent, respectively) to approve the SPF for a
renewed five-year mandate, levying fees on themselves of up to $0.50 per credit to support it.
