Needs of Organisms are Related to the Needs of Cells
They need:
•Energy
•Building materials
•Gases in which you breathe in
energy

Needs of Organisms are Related to Age and Health
• Children- needs equal amount of energy and building materials
• Teenager- need both energy and building materials but more building materials
• Adult- need both energy and building materials but more energy
• Senior Citizen- need both energy and building materials but more building materials

Food/Plants are a source of energy and building materials for organisms
• A plant gets energy from the sun and it produces its own building materials. This
process is called photosynthesis.
• A plant is a source of food for some animals. When the animal eats the plant, the
energy and building materials are passed on. For those animals that don’t eat plants—
carnivores—they eat the plant eaters—herbivores/omnivores—in order to get their
energy.
Herbivore: Burchell Zebra
Carnivore: Human, African
Leopard
Herbivore/omnivore: Varanus exabthematicus

Energy and building materials pass from one living thing to the next.
• Organisms get energy from the plants which get it from the sun. Organisms get
building materials from just plants because plants can produce their own building
materials.
