Dear Families,
Welcome to sixth grade math at Asotin for the 2013-14 school year. My name is Mr. Thummel and I will be
your math teacher this year. Our course will be based on the Washington math standards for sixth grade. The
standards are clear and specific as to what each sixth grader is expected to master by the end of the year! Asotin
sixth graders will be using the textbook-Math Connects Course 2. The login and code above will allow you to
access the textbook, interactive lessons, homework help, extra practice, games, and more from any computer
with internet access. This letter should answer some of the basic questions you may have and please feel free to
contact me at the school.
Grading Policy
Each student’s grade will be determined using the following criteria:
1. Tests/Quizzes (50% of grade): Students will complete a number of quizzes in this course and test will be
given at the end of each chapter. They provide an opportunity to demonstrate learning and provide feedback
on areas that still need work.
2. Assignments (35% of grade): Each assignment will be given a point value based on the number of
problems. Students will grade their own work at the beginning of class to provide immediate feedback.
→ Assignment redos: student will be allowed to redo any assignment until mastery is
achieved. All redo’s will be given 90% of the total points earned.
→ Late Work: Reasonably late assignments will be accepted with a maximum point value of 70%
→ All assignments are posted in the classroom and on the school website. It is the student’s
responsibility to check the assignment calendar when absent to request make-up work.
3. Participation (15% of grade): Participation is readiness, preparedness, and involvement in class.
→Burrito Books: We will create journals for each chapter. In this journal you will record notes,
vocabulary, starters, formulas, and in-class practice. Collected and graded at end of each chapter.
→Accurate planner- must exactly resemble the planner in the classroom
→Bi-weekly progress reports- have parents respond by e-mail or return hard copy for points
(sent home every other Monday- students or parents can access grades on Skyward anytime)
→Math Facts Progress- students will be given pretest to determine placement. Growth is expected
from practice completed at school and home.
*IXL TIME WILL EARN EXTRA CREDIT IN THIS CATEGORY-every 100 minutes = 10 points
