Advanced Algebra – Course Information 2015-2016
Inside the Classroom: Since Advanced Algebra places equal importance on the accuracy of your methods and
the quality of your work, I will design activities and assignments that allow you to develop your skills in both of
these areas. During some classes you will get an opportunity to share your knowledge and methods. I will
lecture often, but I prefer to provide you with opportunities to practice, and guided activities to tackle that will
deepen your understanding of key techniques and concepts. I EXPECT you to PARTICIPATE actively in all
aspects of the daily class agenda.
Outside the Classroom: I assign homework regularly, and you are expected to attempt every problem
conscientiously and deliberately. Some assignments come from the textbook, some may be cumulative practice
problems, and others may incorporate enrichment activities.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be checked daily, and all work must be written out. Just giving answers from
the back of the textbook will not be accepted. The goal of daily homework assignments is for YOU (not Adam
or Eve) to practice and master the course content. I expect you to attempt the assignment on your own
following these guidelines:
 Before you start, get out your notes. Consult them when necessary to ensure that you are following
proper techniques in finding solutions.
 Check the odd-numbered answers in the back AFTER you are done. A solutions manual is accessible in
Mr. Brown’s room with his permission to look at worked out solutions and check even problem answers.
 If you miss a problem or get stuck, refer to the book and notes. Look for similar problems or examples.
 Do not leave a question blank. At the very least, write the problem and something you know or need to
find. I will not accept giving up or just writing the answer.
 For any problems that you struggle with and cannot figure out…e-mail me so that I know ahead of time
when planning my lessons for class. If no one contacts me about questions, then I WILL NOT plan to
spend extra time going over any problems. It is your responsibility to communicate your struggles.
 Daily homework will be checked for completion and effort, whereas cumulative assignments will be
graded for accuracy.
In all that you do in this course, keep in mind the following simple adage:
It is hard to regain lost trust.
