In this class you will explore human anatomy and physiology using a variety of methods: Power Point lectures, videos, online activities, coloring/drawing, laboratory activities including dissections, creative group/partner activities, projects, and independent reading/study. This course will provide an overview of the structure and function of the following body systems: Unit I: The Body as a Whole Unit 2: Support & Movement Unit 3: Control, Communication, Integration Unit 4: Transport & Defense Unit 5: Metabolism Unit 6: Reproduction Ch 1 - The Human Body: an Orientation Ch 2 – Basic Chemistry Ch 3 – Cells and Tissues Ch 4 – Skin and Body Membranes Ch 5 – Skeletal System Ch 6 – Muscular System Ch 7 – Nervous System Ch 8 – Special Senses Ch 10 – Blood Ch 11 - Cardiovascular System Ch 13 – Respiratory System Ch 14 – Digestive System Ch 15 – Urinary System Ch 16 – Reproductive System GRADE: 40% Tests/projects (testing will be after every 12 chapters. There will be one or more projects each 9 weeks.) 40% Labs (includes lab reports, competency checks, and lab practicals) 15% Classwork/homework/quizzes 5% Warmups MATERIALS: -Notebook (Spiral notebooks are discouraged. Five points will be deducted for any work turned in on paper with ragged edges.) -Paper (lined AND unlined) -Textbook: Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, 7th ed, Elaine N. Marieb -Pencils/pens to take notes -Colored pencils for drawing and color coding CLASSROOM POLICIES & PROCEDURES: Assignments/Homework: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what work you missed. A list of assignments is kept on the board in the classroom and work will be due according to the policy outlined in the RHHS Student Handbook. Assignments will also be posted to PowerSchool &/or Canvas (https://rockhill.instructure.com). Assignments that are missed due to unexcused absences will be treated as late work and subject to penalty. Many resources related to assignments can be found on my website: http://rh.rock-hill.k12.sc.us/teacherwebpages/vwalker/anatomyphysiologycp.aspx Testing Policy: Tests missed due to unexcused absences will be made up only at teacher discretion. If you make lower than a 70 on a lecture test you may choose to come to tutoring for the missed questions, then retake the test. The higher of the two grades will be taken, but 80 is the highest grade that will be recorded. Tutoring may include one to one interaction with teacher, extra practice work, or peer tutoring and can be done during RTI, lunch, or after school. The re-test will also be done during RTI, lunch, or after school. Re-testing will not be allowed on lab practicals. Tutoring: I am available for tutoring after school M,W-F. I also have 3rd block planning, so you may come at lunch. Please schedule this with me in advance. I am also happy to answer any questions you have while working on assignments – just send an e-mail. Electronic Devices: Smartphones and tablets are often helpful in our class. However, I expect them to be kept out of site and turned off unless I have given you permission to use them. Notes will be taken by hand unless you have a special need and arrange for accommodations. Use of listening devices such as earbuds/headphones are NOT allowed in the classroom at all!
