What happens during an interview? Key Vocabulary: Body Language, Career Portfolio, Cover Letter, Format, Interview, Job Application, Letter of Recommendation, References, Resume Procedure/Instruction: Day 1 – Introduction: Ask students to share: Have any of you had a paying job? How did you apply for the job? How did you show you were qualified? Watch the video Finding the Right Part Time Job, by TMW Media Group (22 minutes). Have students complete the video guide (see attached) during the video and turn in for a grade. Day 2 – Review Chapter 7.1 in Glencoe’s Exploring Careers book, highlighting the parts of a resume and completing job applications. Day 3 – Create a resume using Career Cruising (or can be done using Microsoft Word—if this is chosen, formatting techniques will have to be taught). Grade resumes on correct capitalization, punctuation, formatting and completeness. Day 4 – Filling out Job Applications – gather job applications from several different local businesses (a sample application is attached). Review proper procedures for completing applications and have students choose a company and complete the application. Grade applications based on neatness and completeness. Days 5 & 6 – Creating a Cover Letter – Show students a sample cover letters ( a simple Google search will result in many letters; there is also one attached. Glencoe includes one on p. 132). Using the sample as a guide, students should type a cover letter to match their job they have applied for. They should use their skills and interests explored through Career Cruising to help draft the letter. Grade letters based on completeness, correct format, and grammar. Days 7 & 8 – Review Chapter 7.2 in Glencoe’s Exploring Careers book, highlighting the process of interviewing. Use the graphic organizer, Putting Your Best Foot Forward (see attached) for student notes. Use the Applying for a Job PowerPoint Presentation to discuss the effects of body language, attitude, dress, firm handshakes, and professionalism. Also discuss common interview questions and keywords such as strengths, weaknesses, diversity, teamwork, etc. Day 9 – Student Mock Interviews – Students will go through the practice of interviewing by pairing up and asking each other common interview questions (see handout). Students can choose one of the jobs they applied for in the job application process or a “dream job.” Observe and assess students’ skills in answering questions, body language and professionalism as the interviews are conducted in the classroom. An optional assessment might include requiring students to dress professionally on interview day. You may also stand at the door, greet them with a handshake and grade their ability to give a firm, confident handshake. Day 10 – Keeping the Job – Reinforce the difference attitude makes in the world of work. Show students the handout “Four Dozen Ways to Stay Unemployed.” (see attached) Watch the video The World of Work: Getting Along With Your Co-Workers by Clearvue & SVE (13 minutes). Have students complete the video guide (see attached) during the video. Discuss answers as a class. Job Applications can be simplified for students as needed. Match the job applications with student interests and abilities when possible. Could also explore completing online job applications rather than paper.
