Slumdog Millionaire & The Departed – Literary Theory Compare/Contrast Essay
In this assignment, you are asked to write a comparative or contrast essay (or a combination of the
two) whereby you will find connections between Slumdog Millionaire and The Departed. Your essay
must adhere to the formal writing rules and the MLA guide.
As you view the movies Slumdog Millionaire and The Departed, take notes on how both productions
adhere to aspects of Frye’s Four Stories, Carl Jung’s archetypes and Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth.
After viewing, complete a critical analysis and state what the motive for metaphor is for each film.
ESSAY QUESTION: Discuss how the filmmaker’s use of Frye’s Four Stories, Carl Jung’s archetypes
and Joseph Campbell’s monomyth are used to inform the film’s motive for metaphor.
The essay must have one argument on the following topics: the monomyth, archetypes and Four Story
model.
Be sure to refer to your notes on essay structure (Essay Outline) provided in class.
You are to structure your essay so that it contains 3 arguments. Your essay should contain a total of 8
paragraphs (6 body paragraphs + introduction + conclusion). Each body paragraph should contain
TWO specific examples. Therefore, you will have 12 examples in total. Please adhere to MLA
handout to cite quotations properly.
