Reminders • News Article Analysis due FRIDAY! 10.6- Origins of the Cold War • After World War II the US and the Soviet Union became increasingly hostile. • Cold War- 1946- 1990- an era of confrontation and competition Soviets • - concerned with security and wanted to avoid a future attack by Germany • - they wanted all countries between Germany and the Soviet Union to be under Soviet control • - they believed communism was superior to capitalism Americans • - concerned with economic problems • - believed that economic growth would keep the world peaceful • - promoted democracy with protections for individuals rights • - promoted capitalism to promote prosperity Germany • Germany and Berlin would be divided into four zones- Great Britain, the Soviet Union, France and the US each controlling a zone. • Germany would also pay reparations for the war. Mutual Distrust – After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the U.S. tried to overthrow the Soviet government. – During World War II, Stalin was angry at the U.S. and Britain because he felt they did not help him enough during WWII. – After World War II, Stalin took over Eastern Europe. He did not hold free elections. • 2. Two Ideologies – The U.S. was dedicated to Democracy and Capitalism. – The USSR was dedicated to Communist dictatorship and the overthrow of capitalism • 3. The Arms Race – The U.S. and Soviet Union were always building new and more powerful weapons. • 4. Competition in the Third World – The U.S. and Soviet Union were each trying to win the hearts and minds of people in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
