Human Trafficking in Iowa: A Presentation by Teresa Downing-Matibag, Ph.D February 12, 6-8pm Nebraska Room, IMU Human trafficking is a growing problem in Iowa, across our nation, and worldwide, impacting over 27 million enslaved persons, which turn out to be mostly women and children trapped in the commercial sex trade. In Iowa and the U.S., traffickers are targeting school and college age youth for exploitation, seeking out vulnerable young people from disadvantaged or abusive families or those they can recruit through the illicit drug industry, strip clubs and escort services, in addition to gangs. Young people are often threatened with their lives or violence against those they love as part of their enslavement, and college students are not immune to such exploitation. However, homeless and runaway youth - the most vulnerable to trafficking victimization - are preyed upon due to their basic survival needs. At this presentation, you will learn about the nature and scope of domestic and international human trafficking, with a focus on Iowa, young adults, K-12 youth, persons easily exploited for labor such as undocumented individuals, and especially America's hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied minors. You will also learn how to prevent the growth of human trafficking in your communities, schools, and places of work. Mocktail Party sponsored by S.T.A.T. (Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow) Feb. 17, 6-7:30pm North and South Rooms IMU This event educates current UI students on cocktail party etiquette and networking techniques. The first 1/2 hour of the event will be a presentation from Michael Stokes, from the Office of the President. He will give advice on how to effectively network at cocktail parties. After the presentation, students will have the opportunity to practice their newly learned skills on a group of UI alumni and Iowa City community members. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to network in a cocktail setting and meet alumni from a variety of occupational backgrounds. This event is free for S.T.A.T. members and $5 admission for non-members. Leadership within Study Abroad Experiences February 18th, 11:30-1pm (FREE LUNCH!)
