• “Globalization is a social process characterized by the
existence of global economic, political, cultural,
linguistic and environmental interconnections and
flows that make many of the currently existing
borders and boundaries irrelevant.” [1] As the

the possible implications on the world’s languages?
Globalization and its affect on
cultural identity
• Facts:
• English has become the major language of business and scientific
research
• The internet was designed to use the Roman alphabet (abc) rather
than Chinese or Japanese characters, etc.
• There are over 6000 languages yet 90% of the content on the internet
is condensed to 21 languages
•
“Language is important not only
as a way of communicating with
others, but as a carrier of culture.
Language loss has many ramifications,
such as loss of culture, family
ties, lifeways, and the ability to
be successful in one’s environment.”
