or need more information. Appointments are also available.
This syllabus is a contract between the instructor and the student. Please read the syllabus to make
sure you understand. Questions are always welcomed.
Start Time and End Time
Class begins at 5:40 p.m. and ends at 8:10 p.m. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay until
class ends. Arriving late and leaving early disrupts class. Failure to comply with this policy may lower
your final grade.
Required Textbook-Students are Required to Bring their Textbook to Class

Course Overview
MAN 2021 analyzes the major functions of management, which are planning, organizing, leading, and
controlling. Emphasis is placed on learning how to manage organizations for excellence in both
performance and employee satisfaction. Major topics include goal setting and goal achievement,
strategic planning, decision making, designing organizational structure, motivating and leading,
managerial control techniques and applications, managerial ethics, and stress management skill. Case
studies and other learning activities will be used to give students an opportunity to make management
decisions and get feedback on their effectiveness.

Learn the principles of management, its functions, and the responsibilities of a manager
Gain an understanding of globalization, ethics, and social responsibility
Learn how to problem-solve and make decisions
Learn the strategic, operational planning process, and financial control systems
Develop knowledge of management planning tools and communication strategies
Learn how to organize and delegate work
Learn how to introduce change in organizations
Develop a knowledge of human resource management and organizational behavior
Demonstrate a knowledge of group and team development
Learn motivation theories and applications to the workplace
Learn leadership theories and applications
Attendance Policy
Students are expected to arrive in class On Time. Arriving to class late is disruptive and discourteous to
the instructor and to other students. Arriving to class late and leaving early may lower your final grade.
If tardiness is unavoidable, please come into the class and sit quietly without bothering other students.
The instructor will not re-teach the class after class ends for students arriving late. If a student misses
more than 50% of the classes; their final grade will be lowered by a full letter grade.
Withdrawal Policy
Students are responsible for withdrawing from this course if they do not wish to complete the course.
Failure to properly withdraw through the Registrar’s Office may result in the grade of “F”. The instructor
is not responsible for course withdrawal.
Teaching Strategies





To apply management concepts, students will be expected to participate in collaborative learning
exercises such as small group discussions, case study analysis and problem-solving activities
To develop and enhance interpersonal and verbal abilities, which are valuable workplace skills,
students will be expected to work together and make brief presentations to the class
Informal lecture, discussion, and facilitation with active class participation.






Make a continuing effort to apply what you learn in class and from other students to your own
personal and professional life
Analyze your managerial style and how others typically react to you; make adjustments, if needed

Practice improving your managerial, communication and leadership skills by stating your
opinions, initiating discussion, participating in discussion, actively listening to others, etc.

Business Resource Center
The Business Resource Center (BRC) has a wealth of educational resources such as academic tutors,
computers, and videos available to help you succeed. Additionally, the MAN 2021Principles of
Management chapter PowerPoint presentations are available on the computers in the BRC. For BRC
office hours and other information, please call 305-237-1017 or visit the 2nd Floor of the North Campus
Library located in Building 2.
Student Responsibilities
The student must be prepared for class by reading the assigned chapters and completing any
homework before class. Students are expected to participate in class discussions and activities. This
will help you to learn, retain information, and develop self-confidence, which is essential to career and
personal success.
Instructor Responsibilities
The instructor is a facilitator or team leader and grader of your learning experience. I am here to assist
you in learning management concepts, theories and workplace practices.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic Dishonesty (as defined by the College) includes, but is not limited to cheating on
examinations; receiving help from other students (unless permitted by the instructor) plagiarizing;
submitting work from another course (unless permitted by the instructor); and assisting anyone doing
these things. Academic Dishonesty is considered to be a serious offense and may result in failing an
assignment, receiving an “F” in the course, or dismissal from the College.

Electronic Devices
Cell phones and other electronic devices must be placed in the silent mode and not visible during
exams. Please tell those who call you that when you are in class you are unable to receive calls.
Exams/In-Class Assignments
Students that miss an exam will be required to take the exam or a cumulative exam at the end of the
term as determined by the instructor. Failure to miss the exam date set by the instructor may result in
an F grade. This exception will apply to only one missed exam. The cumulative exam cannot be
dropped.
There will be no make-up date for any in-class assignment that is awarded bonus points. There will be
no extra credit assignments.
Weekly Homework (homework is only accepted on the date it is due; no exceptions)
Choose any exercise at the end of each chapter and answer the first three questions that follow. Clearly
state on paper your name, chapter and the exercise title you chose. Turn in your homework when you
sign-in. Arriving to class late is disruptive and may lower your grade for the course.
How You Will Earn a Grade in this Course. Please bring your own Scantron.
Bonus points assigned to in-class activities may not be made up.

Current Events Management Article (factored into 25% of your grade)
Each student is required to use the Web, newspaper, journal, etc. to find one current article that relates
to any chapter in the Principles of Management textbook and make a 3-5 minute presentation. Bring 1
copy of your article to class. Your presentation must include the following:





Problem/situation; what were the issues?
Who was involved? What was their role?
How was the problem addressed or resolved?
How does the article relate to management concepts, theories, and practices?
Reference-what was the source of your article, date?
You must complete the 5 exams, the homework and actively participate in class to earn a grade of “D” or
higher in this class.
**Special Note: You must attend class and actively participate in discussions and activities to receive
credit for Active Classroom Participation. In other words, share your viewpoints and experiences that
relate to class discussions and lectures. This will help you to learn and retain information and further
develop your self-confidence. Arriving to class late and leaving early may lower your final grade
because you’re not available to participate.
I strongly encourage you to apply the concepts, theories, and practices you learn in class to your
workplace and other appropriate settings. Higher Education research shows that students learn more
and retain better when they’re actively involved in their own learning.
