Mario Alvarado Ms. Francis English IB 03/07/2022 GMO Global Issue Genetically Modified Organisms or GMOs have helped throughout the world. In countries that have low income such as the Central African Republic, Somalia, Yemen, or countries that don’t have enough food to support the country, GMO’S is a way that food can be easy to access and distribute worldwide to help deal with world hunger and malnutrition. Not only does GMOS have a positive impact socially but also economically as well. The world population is growing rapidly which requires even more food, but the amount of cultivable land and time is limited. According to the United Nations, the world’s population would increase by 2 billion people during the next 30 years from 7.7 billion to 9.7 billion people. The Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that nearly 815 million people are suffering from hunger and malnutrition all around the world. This is a global problem that GMO food helps to reduce. By providing a surplus amount of food with enough vitamins and essential nutrients that humans need. Food companies such as Harvest Plus are trying to help by the biofortification of crops to add more vitamins such as Zinc rice in Asia, Vitamin A Sweet Potato in Africa, and Vitamin A corn in Latin America. The process of biofortification is the usage of modern technology or plant breeding to improve the nutritional quality of crops. So far, this new form of biotechnology has been a great success. Golden Rice is a GMO crop that helps target vitamin A deficiency, which causes child death, as well as blindness, globally. Rice, it’s just the beginning. Soon other crops would be modified to increase iron, zinc, high-quality protein, further vitamins, and healthy fatty acids, all combined in different crops. To prove that genetically modified food has positively impacted people all around the world on the Harvest Plus official website shows that from 2004 to 2018 Harvest Plus has released an overall total of more than 340 crops that had been improved in more than 40 countries. https://www.harvestplus.org/ https://www.un.org/en/sections/issues-depth/population/index.html http://www.fao.org/state-of-food-security-nutrition/en/ The factor that affects the value or worth of crops that have been modified is the amount of profit farm or plantation gain. The demand for GMOs increases in different countries that practice the most agriculture. The production of soybeans, corn, cotton, and canola affects the farm income, production, and yields of the different crops. Cultivating GMO crops has helped farmers to receive economic benefits of over $90.0 billion of profit in 10 years. These profits have been split with the companies and farmers in developed and developing countries to maintain a healthy work ethic. GM Technology Company has increased global production of soybeans, corn, canola, and cotton by using and improving new scientific methods by 230 million tons. Farmers who are adopting the agriculture of GMO seeds have benefited economically and improved farming operations benefiting the environment. GMOs have helped everyone around the world. GMOs have helped deal with world hunger and malnutrition as well as the production of many kinds to help out the country’s economy. Science is the way for a better life and GMOS is a good result and a way to help humans in the future.
