The weekend will be led by NDCS and Sense staff and volunteers, with all outdoor activities led by the centres fully qualified instructors. Why are we organising this weekend? Studies suggest that approximately 3-6% of deaf people have Usher Syndrome. NDCS are meeting more young people on events and activities with Usher Syndrome, as well as seeing an increased membership of families of children with Usher Syndrome. This event gives young people the opportunity to meet other young people with Usher Syndrome as well as the opportunity to meet young adults and positive role models who can share their experiences. The event is all about fun, whilst at the same time building friendships and a peer group. We also would like your child to shape our services for the future by telling us what support they would like NDCS to provide for the future. The event is open to young people with all types of Usher Syndrome – type 1, 2 or 3. Please make us aware at the time of booking of your child’s access and communication needs so we can ensure the event is as inclusive as possible. Why book an NDCS event for your child? We make sure that everyone can understand each other. Communication support is tailored to your child’s needs, including British Sign Language (BSL) or Sign Supported English (SSE). For oral deaf children, we ensure that all instructions are given clearly and repeated if necessary. The aim of NDCS Youth events is to give deaf young people the opportunity to - Learn something new - Make new friends - Meet other deaf children and adults - Express themselves - Do something they didn’t think they could We want our events to be accessible to all families from different communities. Please contact us (details below) if you have any specific cultural requests, communication needs or dietary requirements for your child. We work hard to ensure every child feels happy, included and safe. All staff have police checks and are trained and experienced in working with children and young people.
