Class meeting time and location: All classes are on Saturday mornings from 8:00am –
11:40am at the WBU-El Paso, 4959 Hondo Pass Drive, El Paso, TX 79924.
Catalog Description: Management functions for profit and nonprofit organizations
(planning, organizing, leading, and controlling) and managerial skills and roles in today’s
environment.
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.
Required textbook and resource materials: Management: A Faith Based Perspective,
Author: Cafferky, (1st ed), Publisher: Pearson, ISBN 978-0-13-605834-2.

Course outcome competencies:
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
 Define management and the management process and explain the functions of
management in an organization.
 Describe the factors that are reshaping and redefining management.
 Define organization culture and describe the seven dimensions of organization
culture
 Outline the steps in decision making and describe the three decision types.
 Define planning and explain the utility of goals in planning in management.
 Discuss contemporary issues in planning.
 Explain what managers do in the strategic management process.
 Describe the application of planning tools in goal setting and planning.






Define communications and explain the nature of formal and informal
communications within an organization.
List and describe techniques for reducing resistance of organizational members to
change and two techniques for reducing members stress to change.
Explain how to manage resistance to change.
Define organizational change and compare and contrast vies on the change
process.
Describe modern views of leadership and the issues facing today’s leaders.
Define the nature and purpose of value chain management.
Attendance Requirements: Students enrolled at one of the university’s external
campuses should make every effort to attend all class meetings. All absences must be
explained to the instructor, who will then determine whether the omitted work may be
made up. When a student reaches that number of absences considered by the instructor to
be excessive, the instructor will so advise the student and file an unsatisfactory progress
report with the external campus executive director/dean. Any student who misses 25
percent or more of the regularly scheduled class meetings may receive a grade of F in the
course. Additional attendance policies for each course, as defined by the instructor in the
course syllabus, are considered a part of the university’s attendance policy. A student
may petition the Academic Council for exceptions to the above stated policies by filing a
written request for an appeal to the executive vice president/provost.

Course Requirements and Grading Criteria:

Readings: You are responsible for all assigned readings, as scheduled below,
before each class session.
 Weekly Discussion: There will be one in-class weekly discussion question
presented in class in which the students will respond to the question. The student
will also explain in detail their answer/position. Each weekly discussion is worth 10
points.
 Current Events (CE): A written and oral current events (CEs) will be presented
each week relevant to the principles of management. CE articles may be obtained
from a newspaper, magazine, or website and should not be more than 6 months
old. CEs should be sent via email for grading. Each CE should contain the
following:

Reference (paragraph 1) - properly cite the current event including the author, the
name of the source, the date it appeared or was published, etc. in accordance with
APA (ed 6) guidelines
Summary (paragraph 2) - provide a written summary of the current event in your
own words
Relevance (paragraph 3) - state how the current event relates to the course (with
reference(s) to page numbers in the text)
There are 9 CEs due from each student on the dates indicated on the schedule,
each being worth up to 10 points. A late CE is downgraded 1point per week it is
late.
Quizzes: There will be a total of 9 quizzes, worth 10 points each. The quizzes
will consist of 5 questions in relation to the assigned readings.
 Final Exam: A final examination (August 9, 2014) will be given at the end of the
term. The exam will cover reading assignments, class lectures, and classroom
discussion during the term.

The University has a standard grade scale:
A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79%, D = 60-69%, F = below 60%, W = Withdrawal,
WP = withdrew passing, WF = withdrew failing, I = incomplete. An incomplete may be
given within the last two weeks of a long term or within the last two days of a microterm
to a student who is passing, but has not completed a term paper, examination, or other
required work for reasons beyond the student’s control. A grade of “incomplete” is
change if the work required is completed prior to the last day of the next long (10 to 15
weeks) term, unless the instructor designates an earlier date for completion. If the work
is not completed by the appropriate date, the “I” is converted to the grade of “F.”
Academic Dishonesty: The class will adhere to zero tolerance for using someone else’s
work as your own.
Students are responsible for reading, understanding, obeying, and respecting all academic
policies, with added emphasis being placed upon academic progress policies, appearing
in the Wayland Baptist University Academic Catalog applicable to their curriculum
and/or program of study.
