MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 DEAR PARENTS, CARERS, STUDENTS AND STAFF I hope that this edition of our newsletter finds you well. We have had another successful half term and continue to be very proud of all the achievements of our students. The school continues to grow, I am delighted to inform you that once again next year we have over 200 Year 7 students and some fantastic new teachers joining us in September. Currently students across the school are undertaking internal and external exams. We have been impressed by students’ commitment and dedication to lessons, and to the intervention and additional studies sessions that have been put on to help them achieve to be the best that they can be. As you can see during this half term, we have had many exciting events going on: Rock Challenge, ‘Going to the Polls’, Year Leader Awards, WE Day, 5Live Day and Science Week to name a few. I would like to pass on my personal thanks to all those people who supported and sponsored me in the Brighton Marathon. With the help from students in Year 10 setting up fund-raising activities and the support of students and staff, we managed to raise in excess of £2,000 for Action for Children. Well done everyone, a fantastic achievement and worthwhile activity. I am sure you would like to join us in wishing the students in Years 11, 12 and 13 the very best for their forthcoming exams. The students have really excelled themselves in their studies with this last push and effort I am sure they will achieve the grades they need to move on to the next phase of their lives, whether that is remaining in the Sixth Form, moving onto to University or to work. We are proud of you all, good luck and best wishes. Aim high. Work hard. Be kind. Beth Honnor Headteacher MARRIOTTS GOES TO THE POLLS Marriotts School’s students have had election fever this week and the buzz has been tangible. In addition to this we have recently finished the consultation period regarding our new school uniform. Letters were sent home to parents last week regarding the implementation of the change and the phasing in period. The new uniform will be available from 1st July. Further details can be found on the school’s website at www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk. Copies of the new uniform are shown below. Throughout the week we have run Election Assemblies, in which representatives from all the major political parties spoke to the students. In the absence of Cameron and Clegg, staff and former students presented the policies of all the parties at our hustings. Students listened attentively then debated election issues in lesson time, learning about the democratic process and how government operates. On Thursday 7th May, there was a huge turnout at the Marriotts’ polling station in our library where students eagerly awaited, polling card in hand, to Page 1 Headteacher: Ms Bethany Honnor Marriotts School, Brittain Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 8UT Email: admin@marriotts.herts.sch.uk Tel: 01438 726999 Fax: 01438 318560 Web: www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 cast their vote. Voting took place before and after school and during break, and was co-ordinated by our student Election Officers. The election saw a Labour victory with the candidate Ryan McQueen, a former student, winning 37% of the vote as predicted by our exit polls. Democracy is a fundamental British value and Marriotts’ students as ever were keen to have their say! DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Friday 22nd May – Last day of Summer Term 1 Monday 25th – Friday 29th May – Half Term Monday 1st June – First day of Summer Term 2 Friday 17th July – Last day of Summer Term 2 Marriotts Rocks at Rock Challenge As many of you know, we are delighted that students from Marriotts School beat off fierce competition from 11 other schools from London, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northampton and Berkshire to win not only the open regional stage of the annual Rock Challenge Event held at the Gordon Craig Theatre, but to win 13 of the 14 individual awards available. The theme of the performance was based on an ancient Chinese story depicted on the Willow pattern plate. It is the story of a Mandarin queen who ruled a Chinese Province. She used dark magic to control the seasons, the towns people and her daughters. When one daughter defied her mother by falling in love, the queen stopped at nothing to keep her daughter under her control. In total, 49 students were involved in every aspect of the performance including choreography, set design, make up and technical support. Year 12 BTEC Dance students Lilly Chalkley, Courtney Carr, Kayleigh Harradine, Erin Bowler, Rochelle Staddon and Emma Rose led the auditions, rehearsals, fund raising events and creative designs as part of their BTEC National course. This amazing collaboration saw the school take awards for: Excellence for Soundtrack Spirit of Rock Challenge Visual Enhancement Set design and function Lighting Choreography Drama Entertainment Concept Stage Crew Performance Skill Costuming Character We are incredibly proud of this achievement particularly in light of the competition and very high quality of performances. Our Performing Arts department and students are very talented and this was a very well deserved win. Mrs Bond, joint head of Performing Arts, was particularly pleased that our students also won the Page 2 Headteacher: Ms Bethany Honnor Marriotts School, Brittain Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 8UT Email: admin@marriotts.herts.sch.uk Tel: 01438 726999 Fax: 01438 318560 Web: www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 ‘Spirit of Rock Challenge Award’, an award voted for by all competitors, which recognised the students who were most supportive of others. This support echoed the school’s ethos ‘Aim high, work hard, be kind’.” out for students and would let us know if they seemed like they needed a little extra love (and she was often the person who provided it too!) Rock Challenge is a global competition, sponsored by the 'Be Your Best' foundation. The charity promotes 'healthy living' for teenagers, with no use of drugs, smoking or alcohol throughout the rehearsals and performances. It also advocates attendance to school by giving students who may have become disengaged the opportunity to work towards something they enjoy and want to be in school for. Whilst we will miss her tremendously, she has more than earned her retirement and we are delighted to hear of her plans for all the fun she will have. The students will now take their performance to Portsmouth on Friday 19th June to take part in the National Southern Region Open Final. If the school gain either 1st or 2nd place in this competition they would become a ‘Premier School’ and automatically qualify for the National Finals next year. We continue to help support the event through fundraising activities and approaching local business for sponsorship. If you would like to support us and make a donation, please click Here. Farewell Joyce Welch On Friday 27th March, we said a very fond farewell to our hugely loved dinner lady, Joyce Welch. Joyce has worked tirelessly for the Marriotts' Community (and Bedwell before it) for 40 years. As a cleaner and dinner lady at the school she has cleaned up after our muddy feet; served our hungry stomachs with delicious meals and offered us all a smile every day! There were many sad hearts from both staff and students who will miss her smile. Joyce had always been a dinner lady of the 'old school' who watched Joyce was presented with a plaque, gifts, a standing ovation and endless cheer from everyone. It does not go far enough to express our love but we hope she knows she takes that with her. Year Leader Awards and Headteacher’s Commendation Award Once again we have had a large number of students who have achieved the Year Leader’s Award and Headteacher’s Commendation Award for outstanding achievement. Page 3 Headteacher: Ms Bethany Honnor Marriotts School, Brittain Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 8UT Email: admin@marriotts.herts.sch.uk Tel: 01438 726999 Fax: 01438 318560 Web: www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 Some of the comments received for students receiving the award included: “ … for being hardworking friendly and polite to students and staff at all times.” “… for settling into Marriotts really well and working hard in all lessons.” “ … for working really well and in the top group of students for receiving Achievement Points this week.” “ … for turning around his attitude towards learning keep it up.” The Heroes manage on a daily rota basis, the Humanutopia Room, working in pairs. They help develop the skills and confidence of peers and join in conversations with selected students from Years 7-9. The Heroes are currently working on assemblies and posters to promote ideas. The group work closely together to generate causes for fundraising in order to help benefit organisations including, The Prince’s Trust/Make a Wish Foundation. There are also a number of students who run regular lunchtime clubs and help manage a running club in the Sports Centre. We would like to congratulate and thank all Heroes for their continued contribution to fundraising and the benefits of working closely with their peers. Well done Heroes and thank you. We would like to congratulate all students who have received these awards and look forward to seeing many more during the Summer Term. Humanutopia - Heroes We recently held a training day for the school’s Humanutopia Heroes who worked closely with Year 5 students from local primary schools at the 5Live event. The Heroes were very successful in putting together the event and managing the Year 5 children who were divided into small groups. The Heroes were able to use their skills in setting up and arranging the groups ready for the HARmony Camp at the end of the year. Humanutopia – 5Live Day inspires Year 5 children We recently held a 5Live Day, working in partnership with Humanutopia (www.humanutopia.com), to deliver an exciting day for five Primary schools to help children think about what secondary school would be like. Last term 220 Year 5 students from local primary schools joined together with Marriotts Year 9 and 10 students to enjoy a team building day filled with activities. One of the Heroes from Year 10 said “I didn’t want the day to end, the Year 5s were brilliant, they worked together with other students from schools Page 4 Headteacher: Ms Bethany Honnor Marriotts School, Brittain Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 8UT Email: admin@marriotts.herts.sch.uk Tel: 01438 726999 Fax: 01438 318560 Web: www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 they didn’t know and when the day ended they left Marriotts smiling and confident.” The Year 5 staff who accompanied the students were really pleased to be offered the opportunity as it is difficult to organise events that are free and local. They felt it was a positive step for their children towards considering what secondary school would be like. The event was delivered by Marriotts students that have been trained up as ‘Heroes’ and want to continue with the work. The message is ‘Be Kind’ which is part of the Marriotts School motto ‘Aim high. Work hard. Be kind’. This is the second year this event has taken place and Marriotts will continue to work with Primary Schools to promote 5Live Day to support parents and children considering their future schools. WE Day WE Day is a concert held for students across the UK but where tickets cannot be bought: they have to be earned. Sheen, Craig and Mark Keilburger, the co-founders of WE Day and many others talked about social issues which effect people within our community or around the world. Marriotts School in particular have been inspired after such an amazing day out and plan on raising over two thousand pounds by next year for organisations partnered with WE Day. One of the key messages we learnt in order to help change the way the world works is: ‘you must turn ME into WE and make a change’. Science Week This year Marriotts celebrated Science Week with style. We had two prestigious Universities visiting us and delivering a series of exciting activities for all the students. Year 7 enjoyed taking part in interactive, inflatable planetarium sessions where they learnt about stellar constellations and our Solar System. Year 8 took part in hands-on meteorites activities, where they had a chance to see real meteorites brought to us by Martian students of The Royal Holloway University of London. Year 9 students had a chance to take part in the Sound Show lecture, delivered by The Open University, where they learnt about sound waves. Years 10 and 11 students were invited to listen to the University style lecture about the electromagnetic spectrum and different types of waves. Marriotts School was one of many schools who earned tickets to attend. Fourteen students attended the SSE Arena in London. Children and young adults of all ages gathered to celebrate the good work we all do to make the world a better place. Many performers and motivational speakers attended providing support and help to charities: Shawn Mendez, Bars and Melody, Years and Years, Mr. Probz and Conor Maynard performed amazingly and had the crowd on their feet. Kweku Mandela, the grandson of social activist Nelson Mandela, Award-winning actor Martin The Science Faculty organised a Magic Science show where science teachers performed magic experiments. Mr George turned wine into water! This year the ‘Are you smarter than your teacher?’ quiz winners were a team of Year 7 students who Page 5 Headteacher: Ms Bethany Honnor Marriotts School, Brittain Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 8UT Email: admin@marriotts.herts.sch.uk Tel: 01438 726999 Fax: 01438 318560 Web: www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 proved to be smarter than the Science teachers … very impressive! The Science Department would like to thank all students for taking an active part in this year’s Science Week. Next year there will be more exciting events taking place around the school – see you in 2016. Gambia Project In April five members of Marriotts staff travelled to The Gambia to take part in a weeks’ voluntary work undertaking a building project that was started earlier this year with Stevenage FC. THE MARRIOTTS COUNSELLING AND TRAINING ACADEMY Since the launch of the Marriotts Counselling and Training Academy in February 2014 we are delighted to announce the provision of a complete range of Counselling Training courses at levels 2 to 4 for young people and adults. One day workshops are also available. The Academy offers courses in Effective Listening Skills which give students in schools, aged 14 and upwards, 3 credits towards future studies. We are committed to developing learning and teaching that promotes growth and enhances employability. Marriotts has been working hard over the past six months to set up partnerships with local schools and discussing the projects we will be working with over the next few years. The aim for this year’s trip was to find projects that will enable Marriotts students and members of the local community to visit The Gambia in future years. The school has managed to collect over 400 pencil cases from students and the wider community. These were given to the students of the Anne Marie Johouvey School. The students were very grateful to have received such gifts and thanked all who donated them. We are pleased to announce that Marriotts will be leading this project in 2016 and will be taking students out to The Gambia to continue with the great work already started. We expect this venture to be a great opportunity for sixth formers to travel and experience life in a West African country. If you would like further information please contact Mrs Maddy Faichen, Counselling Manager at the school. TEA PARTY We would like to congratulate students who were selected to attend the Tea Party’s on Wednesday 18 March and Friday 1st May. Students were able to attend from 2.30pm to celebrate their achievements in good attendance, progress and behaviour. We hope they all enjoyed a pleasant afternoon. ROAD SHOWS In April a small group of our newly appointed Year 8 and 9 Sports Leaders have been attending sessions at six of our local primary schools completing in the 'Marriotts 2015 Road Show Events'. The events focussed on promoting the school’s ethos - Aim High. Work hard. Be Kind. The Sports Leaders run the sessions and encourage Year 5 Page 16 Headteacher: Ms Bethany Honnor Marriotts School, Brittain Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 8UT Email: admin@marriotts.herts.sch.uk Tel: 01438 726999 Fax: 01438 318560 Web: www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 pupils to target and challenge themselves and work as a member of a team. Marriotts Sports Leaders are positive role models to the Year 5 students, they encourage good behaviour and motivate them to achieve, whilst developing their own communication, planning and analysis skills. To finalise the event the primary students will be attending Marriotts for a full day of activities and new challenges including trampolining, gymnastics, football, dance, badminton and many more events in the near future. The Road Show cup's, which represent each strand of our ethos, will be appointed to the selected primary schools when they attend Marriotts. The event has brought together students of differing ages who may not normally interact together. The events have been very positive and we look forward to the up and coming sessions. EXAMINATION CERTIFICATES Can we please remind students and parents that Examination Certificates can be collected from the Exams Office. If a student has a brother/sister who has now left the school, these certificates can be collected on their behalf. Please note all certificates will require a signature upon collection. SCHOOLCOMMS We have been using Schoolcomms now for a few weeks and have found it to be very effective when communicating with parents. As a parent/carer you should have access to the school gateway login (details below). The login is for the Priority 1 contact where the student lives, and you will be able to view: Your child’s latest timetable. Behaviour for Learning, points and action. Achievements on the day and what they are for. Your contact details. You will be able to message the school with any changes to your home or mobile numbers from this portal. From time to time, we send information to parents via text message to your mobile phone. A new, free, smartphone app for parents is now available for download called ‘School Gateway’ for Apple (iPhone 3GS or later, iPad, iPod Touch) and Android (2.3 / gingerbread or later) devices. If you have not already done so please download this new app to your phone as it will help us improve communication with parents. Further information and how to download this app to your phone, is available on the school’s website at www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk. EMERGENCY CLOSURE AND BAD WEATHER If we have very bad weather or other emergencies that prevent the school from opening, please listen for announcements on BOB FM (106.7 and 106.9). Information will also be available at www.hertsdirect.org. Please note that although we will continue to notify local radio in the event of an emergency closure and will update the website as soon as we are able, our primary method of communication will be by text to the number identified as the primary parent/carer for each of the students in the school. As a result of this, it is essential that we have your up-to-date mobile phone number. If you are unsure whether or not you have notified us of your mobile number, please send a note to the school with your contact details and a request for your number to be checked on the system. Please discuss with your child what you would want them to do in the event of any sudden closure during the day, i.e. should they go to a designated friend’s house. This is especially important for students who do not live locally. CONTACT DETAILS It is vital that we have up-to-date contact information for you on our database. We are sending most correspondence out electronically Page 17 Headteacher: Ms Bethany Honnor Marriotts School, Brittain Way, Stevenage, Hertfordshire SG2 8UT Email: admin@marriotts.herts.sch.uk Tel: 01438 726999 Fax: 01438 318560 Web: www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk MARRIOTTS NEWS SUMMER TERM 1 – MAY 2015 now, so you are informed immediately of current news/events. If we do not hold an email for Contact 1 then any correspondence home will be handed to your child via the register. Please visit the “Contact Us” page on www.marriotts.herts.sch.uk . This is one way of sending your new or updated details and we will amend upon receipt. North Entrance We would like to remind you that that the gates at the North entrance in Telford Avenue will be closed daily at 9.00am and re-open again at 3.00pm at the end of the school day. If students arrive after this time they will need to make their way to the main school entrance in Brittain Way. Visitors We would also like to remind you that if you are visiting the school you should do so via the main entrance in Brittain Way and report to Reception.
