Peter Matthew 3:1-6 (Read) In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan. Question: Who was there? Crowds! But who? 2 Peter Matthew 3:13-17 (Read) 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ Question: Who witnessed this? 3 Peter 4 Acts 1:16-22 (Read) Judas committed suicide Peter said another needed to ‘take his place of leadership’ (v 20) 120 in the room but only two fulfilled the criteria. What were the criteria? 21 “Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” Question: So was Peter and the 11 there? Peter 40+ days after John baptised Jesus John 1:19-28 (read) V 28: Bethany on the other side of the Jordan (from Jericho) KJV has Bethabara – identified by some as Makht-Ababarah – a place near Jericho, but texts have Bethania. However, this took place at the bottom of the Jordan, near Jericho 5 Peter 40+ days later: John 1:28-39 (Read) John 1:40-42: (Read) Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas [Aramaic]’ (which, when translated, is Peter [Greek]). 6 Peter John 1:43-45 (Read) The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, ‘We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’ 7 Peter John 2:1-2: On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. John 2:11: What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. 1:29 – the next day 1:35 – the next day 2:1 – on the third day 8 Peter 9 Mark 1:16-18 (Read) As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him. See also Matthew 4:18-22(Read): … at once & immediately Peter At Capernaum: Mark 1:29-31: As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. As, for example, in John 1:38-39 (Read). ‘Rabbi, where are you staying?’ ‘Come and see.’ So they went … and spent that day with him. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.” Vs 9-10: “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts – no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.” Questions: Why not go to the Gentiles? Why not the Samaritans? Peter Why not the Gentiles? Why not the Samaritans? Note also Luke 22:35-37 (Read) and note the change Christ and the Samaritans. Not going to Gentiles and Samaritans was also going to change. Luke 9:1-6. What is missing? Peter 18 Two books in the Apocrypha refer to Jeremiah. 2 Maccabees 2:1-12 states that before the Babylonian Exile, Jeremiah took the tent, the Ark of the Covenant and the altar of incense out of the Temple and hid them in a cave in Mount Nebo. 2 Esdras 2:18 states, “I will send you help, my servants Isaiah and Jeremiah”, and some Jews believed that before the coming of the Messiah Jeremiah would return, recover the ark & the altar of incense & the glory of God would once more come upon the people again. Jeremiah is also mentioned in 2 Maccabees 15:12-16. Peter 19 Question: Unusual to have non-Scriptural books referred to? Jude – refers to The assumption of Moses ( vs 9-10) and The Book of Enoch (vs 14-16) Paul quotes Gentile writers in Acts 17:28 and Titus 1:12 (both from the philosopher Epimenides) Note Matthew 2:21-23: the prophets – which ones? Also in Mark 8:31-33 Peter Matthew 17:1-9 (read); Mark 9:2- 10; Luke 9:28-36 V 1: Jesus took with Him Peter, James and John. Mark 9:5-6: Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 22 Peter Matthew 17:9: And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, “Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead.” (KJV; vision = horama; Acts 10:17,19) Mark 9:10: They kept the matter to themselves, discussing was “rising from the dead” meant. But note: Matthew 10:5-8 … “raise the dead”. 23 Peter Matthew 17:24-27 (Read) 24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the twodrachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, ‘Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?’ ‘Yes, he does,’ he replied. 27 “But so that we may not offend them, go … give it to them for my tax and yours.” Note: “So that we may not offend!” Question: What is Christ meaning here? Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped round Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. Question: Believed what? Peter John 20:9: (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Also in Luke 24:1-12 and note verse 12 V 12: Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Then he said to him, ‘Follow me!’ 43 Peter John 21:20-22 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is going to betray you?’) When Peter saw him, he asked, ‘Lord, what about him?’ Jesus answered, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?
