2014-15 LANGUAGE SURVEY CLASS CONTACT ASSIGNMENTS Objective: Give students opportunities to choose their own activities to experience world languages and cultures outside of the classroom. Requirements: Each Friday that class is held one of these assignments is due. Students should come ready to share what they learned with their classmates as well as to turn in the one page typed contact experience paper. PROJECT IDEAS: SERVICE PROJECTS Participate in a humanitarian type of project o An example is Operation Christmas Child. Shoebox gifts will be collected in class until November 14. See how to build a shoebox gift at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ Many church organizations also have humanitarian projects you can be involved in for credit Tutor, read to, care for children that speak another language than English, etc. where you are working with their language or helping them learn English. o ATTEND COMMUNITY CULTURAL EVENTS Attend an event, festival, party, play, concert, etc. about a world language or culture Either scrapbook the event with pictures and descriptions or write a one page report. Please help us locate this type of events to announce in class. Bring in articles or capture a picture of an announcement and send to me on email. o READING o o Read a book (fiction or non-fiction) in English related to this class and keep a daily reading log or write a one page report on the book. Please include the source, a brief summary, tell me how you felt about the book, and what you learned from it. Read a children’s book in the language we are studying at that time. Make a T-chart with Know- Learned or Looked up- Summary. In the “K” section list any words “cognates” that you recognized because they are like English or you have learned them in class. In the “L” section make a list of any words you look up in the dictionary or learned because of the pictures and story context. In the “S” section write a brief summary of the book and your reading experience. Be sure to cite your work (tell me name of book, author, where you got it ie. from classroom or list website etc.) o o Read a chapter of a novel in a language you are studying. Use the K-L-S T-chart as explained for the children’s book. Research information (from at least three sources) on a topic of your choice related to our class. Write a one page report and list your sources. Possible choices are countries, famous people, celebrations, history etc. VIDEO AND MUSIC o o o Watch a video or DVD (30 minutes) in a language that you are learning that we have not watched in class. As you watch the movie, make a K-L-S chart. Try to get between 50-100 words on your list. Watch a cultural movie ie. National Geographic special or travel video. Take notes. Listen to the radio, cd’s etc. in a language you are studying. Write a report listing things you understood, learned, enjoyed, disliked etc. COMPUTER PROGRAM o Work with a computer program such as the Rosetta Stone or online textbooks etc. to practice your language (30 minutes minimum). There are many good game sites that require you to use World languages. FOOD o o Make a meal for your family from one of the countries we are studying. Scrapbook or report your experience. This should be a food that you have never made yourself before (you may have family members help you with this project). Go to a restaurant where you can sample food from a different country. Please make sure that it is either a place you have never been to before or the food you try is something new for you. Take pictures, get a copy of a menu, keep a receipt etc. then make these into a scrapbook page or report. STORIES Retell a story, fairy tale etc. using these ideas: Props or puppets, creative voices, pictures, story map, puzzle, Venn diagram comparison, poster, slide show, adapt story- change roles of villain and hero etc., sequel to the story, or on tape, video, or computer. OTHER: If you have a good idea not listed just check with Mrs. Huddleston to see if it could receive credit and maybe even be added to the list. Remember the goal is to practice your language skills and learn new things. Have fun doing these assignments. I look forward to hearing what you did.
