Introduction Why Griffith became involved in the Project • Investigate deposit processes and repository management solutions • Develop an understanding of issues involved in digitisation of theses • Increase visibility of Griffith’s research output • Investigate potential relationship between ADT and PQIL 2. Planning and investigations Project plan Objectives • To retrospectively digitise theses • To investigate copyright issues • To test DC software • To upload to ADT and trial repository 2. Planning and investigations (cont) Preliminary testing – ADT and PQ/UMI applications used for different ends Scanning options – in-house (Library or D&D), UniPrint, outsourcing, PQIL Copyright issues – obtain authors’ permission, protection of authors’ rights Communication with authors – formulation of letter and permission form, mail-out, responses 3. Scanning and digitisation 50 (+10) theses dispatched to PQIL Turnaround time 6-8 weeks Scanned files downloaded via FTP server at PQIL 4. Upload of theses Staff training Formulation of procedures for uploading to trial repository Testing of customised Digital Commons software 5. Conclusion Challenges – quality control, communication, preparation, changes Outcomes – copyright investigation, digitising processes, expanded repository, increased exposure and profile Implications for Griffith – plagiarism-detecting software, revision of deposit processes, costs The future The University of New South Wales :: Sydney :: Australia Conclusions: • Valuable learning experience • Cooperative pilots can work and may be a precursor to future collaborative projects • Communication strategies and logistics impt. • Estimate time and then double it!!! …mandatory rules / talmacs & cargnelutti The University of New South Wales :: Sydney :: Australia Thank you Helen Keyes Griffith University Library, Brisbane H.Keyes@griffith.edu.au Mary Anne Kennan University of New South Wales Library, Sydney maryanne.kennan@unsw.edu.au
