OUR SOLAR SYSTEM A virtual field trip by: Melissa Turner Standard S4E2: Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar system and will explain the role of relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the moon. • Demonstrate the relative size and order from the sun of the planets in the solar system. Welcome to the sun...The burning ball of The sun is a star. Without the sun, there would be no life on earth. The temperature of the sun’s surface is about 10,000° Fahrenheit. !!!! Next stop ~ Mercury Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun. It is the smallest planet in the Solar System. The same side always faces the sun so it doesn’t see the light of day! Venture to Venus Venus is the 2nd planet from the sun It is the 6th largest planet in the solar system. It takes Venus about 225 Earth days to rotate around the sun. Earth is the 3rd planet from the sun. It is the 5th largest planet in the solar system. Earth is unique from the other planets because it supports a variety of life. Mission to Mars Mars is the 4th planet from the sun. It is half the diameter of Earth. The air is so thin on Mars that humans cannot breathe it. Jupiter is the 5th planet from the sun. It is the largest of all the planets. Jupiter’s “Great Red Spot” ~ a huge storm that has lasted for decades. Sassy Saturn Saturn is the 6th planet in the solar system It is the 2nd largest of the planets. The rings around Saturn are little bits of ice moving around it. Uranus Uranus is the 7th planet from the sun. It is the smallest of the outer planets. Uranus sits on its side, with the North and South poles sticking out the sides. Last stop ~ Neptune Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. It is about half as big as Saturn and has eight known moons. Neptune is a cold, giant gas planet that is made up of mostly rock and ice. List the 8 planets in their order from the Sun.
